In relationship to real world experiences that have aided in my ability to be successful in field experiences, I have gained knowledge for successful student learning through participation in the Partners in Education program at Waco I.S.D. Through my previous employment at Oak Farms Dairy, I was afforded the opportunity to be the liaison for the company to partner with Provident Heights Elementary. Over the span of 15 years, I spent time in the school participating in various endeavors. First of all, during Red Ribbon Week, I the company provided drug awareness booklets and I would visit the classrooms and read-aloud to students. In addition, on several occasions I participated in their career day festivities by speaking to the students

In the past, I’ve hosted Elementary School Leadership Conferences for my school’s SAFE for Southwest club. I, along with a group of five other students, founded this drug prevention club my senior year, because it was something that my team and I were extremely passionate about. I was responsible for recruiting and retaining membership throughout the year and the club grew from five to twenty members in just one year. I was in charge of planning and running the events and activities for the kids at these events.…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. My palms would sweat, my voice would tremble, and it took all the strength I could muster to overcome my irrational fears. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…

As a service learner, it is my goal to better myself, assess and improve my social awareness and responsibility (especially involving social justice), and to do something that is meaningful to me. I wish to improve lives and people’s days, even if it is something incredibly minimal like making a child smile by coloring a picture for them. I want to feel invested in my community. It is these reasons which lead me to choose working with the America Learns after school program at the Tobin K-8 School. There are opportunities and instances every day when I feel like I have made an impact in a student’s life.…

My field experience took place in a public elementary school where I work. I chose to observe two first grade students who are in the same class. One of these students, Zachary, is a seven year old boy who has been identified as “mentally retarded”; however according to Kirk, Gallagher, & Coleman (2015), “today we use the term intellectually and developmentally delayed”. The other student, Joel, is also a seven year old boy who has been identified as being developmentally delayed. During the course of my field experience, Joel was officially labeled as being Autistic.…
