I realized I had a race when I was 9 years old. It was my first time attending a public school. It was located in the upper class part of town. Everyone …show more content…
I come from a middle class family. My grandparents were of working class, but by the time my sister and I were born my parents had reached the middle class. My parents “scratched their way to a comfortable middle- class life through hard work” (Jensen 1). My family according to the mythical norm fits almost perfectly. I have two parents who have been together almost 25 years, they both have some college education and they are of middle class. My mother nor father have a college degree, but they do both have careers. My father owns his own business. He is a general contractor and realtor. My mother is a secretary and realtor. She has been working the same position for almost twenty years. At one job my mother is paid by the hour while at the other she has a salary. My father has a salary. I believe we are a middle class family because we are able to have luxuries such as, a nice comfortable home that is owned, able to take multiple vacations throughout the year, and my sister and I are not required to have a job. My parents prefer for both of us to focus on our education, “School performance (grades and test scores) and educational attainment (level of school completed) also correlate strongly with economic class” (Mantsios 198). As a young lady I am viewed as weak as if I have no voice. In society my gender is treated with a lot of care. We need more attention as females and we’re not looked at as the brightest individuals. I believe it is very funny how my family treated the one boy and three girls differently. For us girls, we weren’t allowed to date before we were 18. We were always protected by the adults and looked at more closely when it came to our bad actions. We had many more consequences for doing one wrong action than the boy has ever had. When it comes to dating for the boy, they are all excited for when he has his first girlfriend, not to mention he’s only 9 years old. He is still protected, but not in the same sense as we were. Male privilege in society has affected me because I am part of the minority group. I will be paid less than my male co-workers only because we have different genitalia. We women aren’t valued as highly as men when it comes to the workforce. Typically, most women are viewed sexually rather than for their intellect. My gender is connected to what I have so far experienced in life by being able to walk down the runway in heels and make-up and so much glitter. I was able to fan girl over Joe Jonas taking his shirt off in 2007 at his
