Personal Narrative: My Quality Of Critical Thinking

Decent Essays
I can honestly say I have never really looked at Critical Thinking the way I see it now. Weak critical thinkers lack the ability to look at things from different points of view being true or not true. Strong critical thinkers have the ability to see things, and question every angle of their way of thinking, and come up with a theory or realistic view or stand point on that topic or discussion. The quality of critical thinking, I feel I am a strong critical thinking! My best quality is Intellectual courage: the willingness to face and fairly assess ideas, beliefs, or viewpoints to which they have not given a serious hearing, regardless of one's strong negative reactions to them. Critical thinking in general has never been one of one of my strong suits, but I believe that out of the 7 characteristics provided by Ruggiero the one that represents my greatest strength is that I tend to think before acting. I was taught early on that thinking before doing will, one help in success and two lead you on a better path in life. Acting impulsively can be very pleasing and come with an adrenaline rush, but in the end did you really make the right choice for yourself. My father is a perfect model for someone who acts without thinking, yes he has had much success in his life, but due to his impulsive behavior there has been many failures to follow those acts that have ended in success. In multiple situations in my life I have had…

I appreciate receiving constructive feedback, since this criticism is valuable for me improving from my mistakes. Recently, I had been a leader of a group with whom I had worked on developing a new soda brand, for our entry in the Coca Cola sponsored, World Series of Innovation Competition. Being leader of this team, I encouraged my team to be open and give me their best suggestions. In this process I received positive criticism for my approach in leadership, feedback that I can apply to become a better leader. My group informed me that I took too much initiative to complete the unfinished tasks of some participants, rather than encouraging them to do this work themselves.…

In my opinion, the concept of thinking critically involves deep thinking and concentration in evaluating things around you – what it is, why it occurred and how. Critical thinking also allows you to be conscious about the ideas and actions of yours as well as others. This would include questioning the credibility and source of information given by others. Therefore broadmindedness is often a trait of critical thinkers – they are able to weigh and “be critical” to ideas produced via multiple perspectives.…

I firmly believe that the term "critical thinking" is in fact far less related to strict guidelines of what is or is not critical thinking, but rather the ability to step back from any given practice, problem - anything really - and reexamine it anew. When companies are asking for people who have critical thinking skills it's not that they are asking for employees to sit down, take a test where they "critically think" about different scenarios, and then describe the "right" answer - and I believe that is what most students believe they are being asked to do - but rather that the company is asking you to sit down and examine those scenarios to see what "weird" ideas you can come up with. Because being weird is how you innovate, and as economies become more competitive than at any point in human history companies have to be innovating constantly in order to stay alive.…

The diverse ways in which critical thinking can be applied are astonishing. One may find themselves in a group project working towards a common goal and an individual would find it immensely helpful to be able to process the ideas or statements and go through steps exploring possible problems, solutions, and meanings. In a professional environment, possessing this skill would demonstrate not only competency, but leadership. In a meeting, one may be asked what one thinks of the ideas that have been discussed and it would serve one well to be able to analytically and intellectually reflect on what has been discussed and arrive at an answer to a problem that one’s peers would comprehend. Possessing the skill of thinking critically is crucial in all parts of life; it is a skill that will be easily noticed and assist one in answering any question that…

My approach as a writer is that I must ponder over what I should write about and how it should be written before I go on to start the essay. I am perceived to be a board walker: I have a simple task and the ability necessary to do it, but I am frozen at the start line thinking of what to do until I look back and realize a fire started on the building supporting the end of the board meaning it is time to move. The assignment asks that I analyze my growth as a critical writer and thinker, but I can’t. ‘Why?” you may ask is because you cannot grow if you do not understand what is needed to grow. Throughout my high school years, I’ve seen myself grow grown in numerous aspects such as maturity and a sense of responsibility through the habits of heart and mind. My strongest habit of heart is interaction. I am able to work and be completely open and accept constructive criticism with others more efficiently than I was ever able to. Working with others was a weakness especially since I’d end up doing most if not all the work and felt they didn’t deserve my grade. Fortunately for me, I had teachers by my side helping me open up to the idea of working with others.…

Based on the reading, there are three forms of critical thinkers, but the two requested in this discussion are: weak sense and strong sense. Both types of critical thinkers understand the value of logic and will actively seek reasons to support their claims and alternatively find weaknesses in others. On the other hand, it would seem that the primary difference between the two would be that a strong critical thinker is more ethical than a weak critical thinker. One considered "weak" is driven by their ego, less willing to be objective, and would only seek reasons that defend and strengthen their stance and weaken others. While one considered "strong" would not merely focus on winning an argument, he or she would seek reasons supporting and…
