We do not live in a perfect world: failure is part of reality. I know this, yet I still strive for perfection in all aspects of life. Reaching perfection is a lifeline in times of chaos, but is also a catalyst for chaos in times of sanity. I thrive off of completing goals, and I will go to great lengths to ensure that everything I do is beyond satisfactory. This sometimes leads me to stress over things that are insignificant and allow simple tasks to consume all of my time.
Perfectionists are self-disciplined, self-motivated, determined, and resilient; we refuse to accept any standard short of perfection. These qualities seem favorable, but have massive potential for internal destruction. Extreme self-discipline comes with self-criticism, and expectations of flawlessness comes with fear of failure. As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace.
