Personal Narrative: My Public School Career

Improved Essays
My public school career was one filled with corruption, incompetence, and hardships. There were teachers who would fail you for no reason or kids who would try to frame you for things simply because they didn’t like the way you dressed. With the exceptions of a few students and teachers, I experienced some of the worst sides of the Loudoun County Public School system. I find myself glad that I learned all the lessons I did from those hard times because without them I would not be the person I am today.

One of my first clear memories from elementary school was my first-grade teacher. Ms.R was a teacher that appeared to enjoy literally yelling at students for the smallest of things and used public humiliation as her main tool for discipline. The memory that I remember so clearly is one of a false accusation that changed how I had to work in her class. It all started when we had a substitute. During recess, I was playing with one of my friends and we were drawing things with colored pencils. While I was drawing, my pencil broke so I had to sharpen it. I went over to the electric sharpener and waited behind

They did what many parents would do and went to the teacher to face the problem head on, but instead of meeting someone who was reasonable and listened to what they had to say they met someone who ridiculed them on how they raised their son and told them that he would probably have to take the first grade over again. This was the event that made them take the matter to administration. Soon they were in the principal's office asking to have me removed from the class, especially with the teacher confirming what she had done. My parent’s request was not met for one reason, there wasn't any room left in any class because of the kids that had already been moved out of the class. This meant that I had to suffer through the rest of the year with this terrible

Hardworking, trustworthy, selfless, determined, and helpful… I believe that I have demonstrated these qualities exceptionally throughout my high school career. A glimpse at my exquisite grades that I have kept in four years of challenging classes reveals not only my effort, but my endless determination as well. Despite all of the energy that I directed towards my own success at school, I was always willing to help others who struggled in their classes, especially in math and science. Also, I put time and effort into my extracurricular activities in order to benefit my school’s community. I painted a mural of the Mt. Hope Bridge to beautify a conference room, helped plan countless events for the entire student body, from spirit weeks to…

This year has been a crazy one. I came from a public school, not knowing anyone, so I terrified and didn't know what to expect. I struggled with trusting others, time management and battling multiple tasks at once. Luckily, I had a lot of practice throughout the year. For instance when we had to record a News Show for Mr.Mora's class, I was faced with all of these problems.…

As I looked around at my new classmates on my first day of public school, I was in complete shock. All around me I saw students who did not care in the slightest about their education and who saw school as simply a chore instead of an adventure. They slumped down in their chairs, cheated off of each other left and right, rolled their eyes at teachers, and spent each day watching the clock, waiting for the bell to ring that would released from their “prison.” That August morning, I felt like I was in a completely different world: one where I did not belong.…

Mr. Propst: In response to your letter of Reprimand and Final Warning concerning the incident mentioned in the letter dated February 20, 2017. I totally rebutt and disagree with the action taken and the letter of reprimand. As I stated to my direct administrator and to you, Mr. Probst, I did not call the student “the scum of the earth” as the student accused me of doing. I would never call a student anything so derogatory or hurtful. I did state I was disappointed in the decisions he made and believed he could make better decisions in the future in regards to an altercation on our school campus that this student was involved in and was cited to court over.…

Though I am not even half way through my high school career, I feel as if I can still be a help to those who are just beginning. High school is probably the most important part of your life that you are responsible for in our teenage years, so it is important not to mess it up. There are a few concepts that I have figured out by myself that I wished someone would have told me. Those of which include never procrastinate, think about your future, learn how to manage your time, and do not settle for less than your best. My first recommendation is that you don’t procrastinate.…

My middle school days were not the best; I encountered many instances of bigotry from students. I was teased endlessly and disrespected because of my diversity. Born and raised of West Indian Heritage, students made my life a living hell because I spoke with an accent. “Where are you from?” instantly began the conversation.…

I began working on my flexibility when I was only a year old--I did the splits across the Atlantic Ocean. With one foot in Bulgaria and one in America, I had to learn to hold my stretch for months at a time. Soon after I was carried, swaddled, and sung to on the flight into the United States, I learned to walk and speak English. I have PBS Kids and Looney Tunes mostly to thank for this, though I admit American public education could possibly have had some part in my fluency. It wasn’t long before I began writing semi-comprehensibly and nagging my parents in not one but two languages.…

The literacy agent that has positively influenced me the most in my academic career has definitely been my High School senior year English teacher Mr. Green. He convinced me to peruse a higher education after High School, when I wasn’t planning too. Over the course of that year we built a strong teacher to student relationship. We also became good friends as time went on and even spend some time discussing interests outside the classroom. He showed an interest in helping me as an individual since the beginning of the year.…

The last 3 weeks have been a whirlwind of chaos with everyone running around like chickens with their heads cut off! Between preparing for and starting state testing, dealing with a less than helpful yearbook company, and a “heated” field day, I have decided that we really need more hours in a day. MAP Testing All of the testing scheduling I discussed in my second reflection has gone amuck this week.…

I was a part of two separate photography classes during the school day, in addition to being an assigned teacher aide to the photography teacher during my free class period. Even outside of assigned class time, it was not uncommon to find my friends and I within the photography classroom, it was there that we would spend our lunch hour, as well as some of our after school time, working on projects, aiding other students or socializing. My photography teacher, Mrs. Curry, was an eccentric woman with fiery red hair, a passion for teaching and an infectiously cheerful outlook towards life. I grew very close to her throughout my high school experience and she became an incredibly positive adult figure and mentor within my life. Due to my tremendous involvement in the photography program and my close relationship with Mrs. Curry I soon became more actively aware of problems within the school system that I had passively accepted in the past.…

My first experience working in a low income community was when I was a sophomore at Georgia State University. I was a member of a Post Readiness Educational Program (PREP). My role at PREP was to go to low income middle schools during the week and help seventh and eighth graders with homework and talk to them about how to prepare for high school and what they will need to do in order to succeed. When helping the students with their homework I realized how incredibly smart they were, yet they had so many outside influences that were a distraction. Some of these distractions included, but were not limited to, family problems, poverty, and issues with peers at school.…
