“But at least I will try,” I replied to my new classmates in Dr. W.’s ELL class, who informed me that she was a real witch and no matter how insistently I would work, it was useless to expect to have anything higher than “C.” Without any hope to convince them, I spent all my time to prepare for English classes, and, to everyone's surprise, after two months I was on the way to a stable “B.” Right after the New Year vacation Dr. W. decided to give us a test, but, coincidentally, my father was going to have a complicated surgery that day. After taking him to the hospital, my mother and I waited there for 10 hours until he regained consciousness. When I came home that night, I checked my Schoolnet account and found out that Dr. W. gave me a zero for the missed test, so, my current grade fell down to “F”.…

The first time I heard the word “abortion” I didn’t even know what the term meant, but it sure seemed that I wasn’t supposed to have ever heard it – or at least not yet. I had paused my episode of SpongeBob and ran upstairs to get snacks; I ran away from the comfort of my basement and my brightly colored handprints that adorned my walls. Suddenly I stopped, but not because I had finished climbing the stairs; I was too afraid of what was waiting at the top. Standing in the darkness, within an arm’s length of whatever lurked behind me, I heard my father say quietly to my mother, “Are they going to abort it?” I was no longer afraid, I was perplexed.…

Childbirth in the United States can be a very diverse process for expecting parents (although the focus is generally on the mother, since she is the one that is physically pregnant.) Even though there are all of these options to choose from, many mothers will choose the more conventional options like a vaginal delivery with or without an epidural. They are actually rising in popularity though, as less women want to have medication aiding them during labor. When it comes to common medical interventions in the United States, like cesarean sections or episiotomies, trends remain relatively high for these “emergency” procedures (although episiotomies are declining)…
