Personal Narrative: My Practicum At Phillips Graduate University

Improved Essays
It is hard to believe that I am writing about the end of my practicum when I feel like I am just starting it. There are many things I like about my practicum at Phillips Graduate University. We started in July with three hour training classes on Mondays. My supervisor Robin is very knowledgeable about working with children and has provided us with lots of pertinent information. Mid-September, we started working in the preschool classrooms. In my cohort at Phillips there are students who work at Head start and students who work at local preschools. Usually the Spanish speaking student go to Headstart because most of the parents of the students only speak only Spanish. My supervisor didn’t have enough Spanish speaking students so asked me train at the Headstart School which I did …show more content…
Another problem is that headshart used to allow each parent to have three sessions with a counselor, which wasn’t a lot, but now they reduced to two sessions, a beginning and a closing session which isn’t much time to do anything. Robin found around Spanish speaking student, but at told me that she decided she would keep me at Headstart because she didn’t have another English speaking school for me to go to. While I enjoyed my time at Headstart, I let her know that I didn’t think I would get enough experience there. So, she found me a wonderful school called the Weekday School which is located in Northridge. I have now been there for two weeks and once again, Robin wants me to spend the first four weeks getting to know the students. This is why I feel like I am just starting my practicum. Other than interacting with the children during their normal day at preschool, I haven’t seen or worked with any clients. So I think the most difficult thing about my practicum is having assignments in class that don’t relate to what I am doing in my

There was no staff member who could speak Spanish; however, luckily, she found an intern who spoke Spanish (personal communication, 2017). In terms of chronic absence, school social workers often work at more than one school, which may cause interventions with students to be inconsistent. As social workers attempt to meet the needs of multiple students, they may become overwhelmed with the amount of work they have to do. Although students eligible for McKinney-Vento services can receive transportation to school, if the location of the student is “not feasible” for the school, then transportation will not be provided.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

My first year of high school was winding down, teachers had covered all learning material, and most students were preparing for finals. June had just begun, and along with studying, I had an upcoming saxophone recital for which I had been preparing since April. The Tuesday before my recital, I had my second to last lesson with my teacher, Fred Scerbo, before the recital on Sunday. I was preparing a piece by Charlie Parker named "Anthropology". Despite its difficulty, I felt that I would be able to perform it well.…

As I entered the University of Southern Florida and enrolled in my first college classes, I had no idea what “Academic Foundations” meant. I thought that it was going to be a class about how to write papers, take tests, and use a computer. So naturally, I wasn’t too thrilled. The term “academic” doesn’t normally scream fun. I originally thought that I was going to learn a bunch of stuff that I already knew and didn’t need help with.…

When registering for Project FOCUS this year, I thought that it would be just as simple and “cookie cutter” as it was last year. Although it definitely was just as enjoyable, it proved to be much more of a rocky road. My class was extremely inclusive in that there were just as many students with special needs as there were without. This was a big jump for me because nearly all off my students last year were at a relatively similar learning level, and this year it was a more polar experience. Working in Ms. Evans class this semester taught me a lot, mainly to be patient with student and to be patient with myself even when all of my teaching tactics seem to not be effective.…
