Personal Narrative: My Practice Journey

Practice Journey:
For our practice journey, we completed 6 hours of various activities to help prepare us for our qualifying journey. We began with kayaking around Rheault Bay by our cottages on Turnbull Island. While we were out on the kayaks, we also practiced kayak emergency procedures like the “T-Boat” rescue. Back on land, we practiced campsite activities like building a fire, setting up a tent and campsite cooking. We then brainstormed items we need and created group and personal equipment lists (shown below.) We also discussed ways to make sure that our trip has no negative impact on the environment and went over the Wilderness Code of Behaviour. In the summer of 2014, I went on a 2-week canoe trip with Camp Stephens and I will use the skills I learned on that trip during this Adventurous Journey!

Our leader for this trip was Claire’s cousin, Tom Meier. Tom has had many years of camping experience in Lake of the Woods. He recommended camping on the southeast end of Shammis Island.
We decided to paddle from Middle Island to Shammis Island and planned to kayak around 12 km each day. My Uncle, who is an avid paddler, has a cabin on Middle Island and he very kindly allowed us to borrow two of his kayaks for our journey and use his cabin as a starting point! For our second day of paddling we originally were going to kayak around the other side of Shammis Island and across the larger portion of water to Middle Island. However, on our first day of the journey, as we were paddling we noticed how rough that larger portion of water was. Therefore, we decided to travel back the same way on the second day just as a safety precaution.
Apart from some rough water, we had amazing weather for our trip and overall I had a great experience. I haven’t camped since my previous two-week canoe trip experience, so it was nice to camp and paddle again, and to do it with some friends was a

“Here we are,” I thought to myself as my parents and I pulled up to a big oak tree in our old, puke colored Subaru. The massive tree overlooked the Boston Harbor and the enormous cruise boats on it. Under the oak stood an assortment of kids and instructors from all over the world. No a one of them knowing what they were about to get their self into.…

If you got multiple injuries and you can’t move, in the woods, and you were missing for 5 days, what would you do in this situation? As morning came the sunlight abatjoured through the dark dim lit canyons, of Gunnison National Park, Colorado . I slowly crept out of my sleeping bag, every muscle sore from yesterday's hike. I thought to myself how lucky I am to be backpacking through the National Parks, with four other girls. As I made some camomile tea over the warm fire, a bald eagle soared above the 8,775 ft tall canyons.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Q’orianka Kilcher, an actress, once stated, “I think it's important for us as a society to remember that the youth within juvenile justice systems are, most of the time, youths who simply haven't had the right mentors and supporters around them—because of circumstances beyond their control” (Huffington Post). Being out on the lake was both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. It was like being at the top of a rollercoaster waiting for the first drop, the heart-squeezing plummet to certain death that was never quite fulfilled. My first week at the Lake of the Ozarks Scout Reservation, or Camp Hohn as everyone called it, was probably one of the worst weeks of my life. The camp looked nice on paper; it was described as a 120-acre camp on the banks of the Lake of the Ozarks, with bluffs overlooking the lake and many campsites, all surrounded by a five mile nature trail. However, they failed to include in the brochure that due to the camps size, the classes available to take were extremely spread out. To get to the waterfront, hiking down switchbacks was necessary. Also, the bluff was difficult to reach and had no railing, which offered no protection from the one hundred foot drop to the water below.…

I woke up Friday morning around seven, comfortable in my rainbow hammock, surrounded by tents which my counselors and friends had slept in. Bus days were finally paused, and the hikes were to begin in less than two hours; I was ecstatic. Eight campers and two staff members piled into the white van we had rented. We only had just enough room for all of our hiking packs to be placed on our laps and in the little crevices we could smush them in. When we arrived at the trailhead we gathered around the map to see what were getting ourselves into, and then stretched for quite some time.…

It was a definite change of scenery to be immersed in nature with lush greenery, crisp air, and ocean views instead of the normal classroom scene. I liked that this experience was a chance to interact with my colleagues and learn who they are on a personal level subsequent to grading their three-minute stories the previous Fridays. From this hiking experience, I learned the value of teamwork, effective communication, and what encompasses wholesome leadership as well as what can transpire when there is no leadership. As like all experiences, there are some parts I cherished and others not as much.…
