Personal Narrative: My Political Identity

Decent Essays
For as long I can remember, my political identity was none existent. In my country, Puerto Rico, there are three primary political parties, the Popular Democratic Party (PDP), the New Progressive Party (NPP) and the Puerto Rican Independent Party (PRIP). It is common knowledge among Puerto Ricans that the first party listed believes that the government should maintain its political status as a commonwealth while the second party would prefer the island would become the 51st state in the United States of America, and obviously, the third party wants the country to become independent. My father doesn’t believe in any political party though my mother thought that nothing good would come from making Puerto Rico an American state. However, time,

The United States is currently very much divided politically. There’s the liberal left and there’s the conservative right. The partisanship in politics has its uses and its faults. Perhaps the biggest and most blatant benefit to the political party system is that party identification allows voters to know this stance of their candidate on important issues.…

Visions are only unique as the individual themselves who make up this country. America is not the same as it was ten years ago. Who would have thought that we would have cell phones that were similar to a small computer in our pocket, a car that could talk back to us, or that we would have an African American president? Our visions for America could change everyday. My vision for America is very unique for my age group.…

The rising prevalence of those who identify as independents may end up causing what could be seen as a further distance between the two main parties. Since most people tend to identify, albeit some hesitantly, towards one party or the other, people’s political beliefs begin to spread out more and more on a politically continuous spectrum. For example, “Nearly two-thirds of those who initially label themselves Independents concede that they are closer to one or the other party. These are the "leaners," "partisan Independents," or "Independent Republicans" and "Independent Democrats” (Keith, 1992). “What caused this shift towards more widespread political views?”…

Party identification is typically determined by the political party that an individual most commonly supports, by voting or other means. Notably, close to 90% of voters affiliated with a political party vote for that party's candidate in presidential elections. American voters tend to learn and adopt whichever party affiliation most influenced their childhoods. Those raised in a family of Democrats usually identify themselves as politically liberal, while those raised in a family of Republicans usually identify themselves as politically conservative.…

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

I, as well as the rest of America, have multiple responsibilities to America. She has given me freedom, rights, and liberties, that citizens elsewhere do not have. I have the freedom to present my opinion, vote for my leaders, and freedom to practice my own religion with protection to do so. These rights, along with many others, were not given to me for free. Many courageous men and women have died in order for me to have these rights.…

Revised Draft - Bahni Baukhagen Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream, and look where that got him; I have a vision, think of all the places I could go. America today has been built up from every individual before us, some contributing more than others. Some, however, decide not to partake in the betterment of our country, encouraging our country to become hopeless and sordid. My vision for America is giant, bigger than you can imagine; and much larger than I can convey in an essay, but I will try my best. I have a vision, and like an architect creates their blueprints, I am going to paint you a picture.…

I am a conservative and I am a woman which to a lot of people including women is a contradiction, many including myself in previous years thought being a conservative meant being submissive to men and becoming a housewife for the 10 children I would have. I learned through a couple years of discovery and much more to come that I don't have to believe the bible verse by verse and I don't have to abide by my grandmother's standards. During my first two years of high school, I had a very hard time figuring out where I belonged which led me to a depressive phase where I blamed my sorrows on god and my family. I tried to figure out where I belonged by befriending people that repeatedly told me my parents were dumb because they didn't finish college which is why they had small-minded thoughts.…
