When I first contemplated enrolling in this course, I was unsure if it would be the right fit. I had so many questions. Was it the right time to take on a class with a 40-hour volunteer component? What organization would I work with? Realistically, do I even have the time for a course like this? After much thought and deliberation, I clicked on that submit button and enrolled in SOSC 300, and frankly, looking back on the past few months, it was one of the best decisions I have made during my time here at UVic. After the initial nervousness of undertaking a course like this one subsided, and my placement at the Pender Island Community Hall was secured, I was overcome with feelings of possibility, not only because this would be an excellent forum

As the daughter of parents who love to travel, I’ve had the pleasure of travelling across Canada and America as well as a few other countries from a young age. I have visited the loud and bustling streets of Tokyo and the ethereal gardens in Kyoto, stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, walked the strip in Las Vegas, and watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean in Martha’s Vineyard. Although I should be able to look back on a childhood filled with events and memories from trips, I find it difficult to recall most vacations without a visual prompt. When I flip through old family photo albums, I don’t recall much more than what is shown in their pages. The outdated clothing, the people, and the locations are seen in the images, and therefore…

I grew up in a place where the neighbors lived a mile away, the animals ran loose all the time, and if you really felt like it, you could walk outside naked and nobody could really see you. It was a small town where everybody knew everybody; when driving down the road, you knew who was in the car passing you, and by the off chance you didn't, you still waved anyways. Going to the local gas station for a soda or to fill up the truck turned into a trip to go see your friends and visit. The family lived right around the corner, and bonfires were a regular thing. "Sedgewickville Population: 173" is what the town's sign said.…

My residential community has had a great impact on me. The community provides an ideal atmosphere to meet a variety of people. Not only does the residential community promote diversity and inclusion, but it has also granted me the unique opportunity of leading in a college atmosphere. After arriving at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I started spending most of my time in the lobby because my room did not have air conditioning. While in the lobby, I met a racially and geographically diverse group of people.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

Coming from a small town down south, opportunities were not always present. Living with a single mom of two there was never time for me to focus on what I wanted to do. The future never seemed this close, stepping into adulthood without a plan was disheartening. I slowly slipped into the wrong crowd and made decisions I wasn’t proud of. I left North Carolina in 2014 to live in Massachusetts with my dad and stepmom before continuing my descent down the rabbit hole.…

The community I have always been involved in is sports but the one that impacted me the most was a community called drop-in soccer.
