Everybody has that special place that holds so much meaning to them that just about nobody would ever understand. My place is one specific house in Nebraska. This place isn’t only special to me, but it defines who I am. Before I realized I loved this place and did not take life so seriously, I needed to persevere through a place I hated. Then after moving away from this place I had to accept that nothing is permanent. When I was eight years old, I lived in the hot and sunny desert of New Mexico. My life seemed almost perfect with a bright future in sunny New Mexico. However, I found out the news in September of that year that my family and I would be moving to Nebraska. I had never been to Nebraska, so I was sharply intrigued yet had no idea what was waiting for me. My first day there, there was a light chilly breeze and a dark sky. The details of the climate created my first impression of Nebraska as a dark, dreary place that nobody wanted to be near. There was no turning back. This would require me to push through, overcome this dark obstacle, and hope that one day, the sun will shine again. …show more content…

Fortunately, I was still in Nebraska with just a short drive from the new house to the aged house. However, just because I moved a little further away, that did not mean that the memories would discontinue. Every Saturday, when the Huskers played football, my dad and I would cook up chips and queso, then drive over to the old house to eat snack food and watch the Huskers play. Everyday we would go there, it would be sunny and warm. This was such a simple and pleasant time of my life. Whenever I start to get angry or upset about something, I always think of this peaceful time and realize that I don’t need to take life so

Throughout my life I have lived in three cultural distinct regions Lima Peru, White Plains New York and Baltimore Maryland. For the first two years of my life I lived in Lima, Peru and even though I never culturally adapted myself into the culture I would often visit for months and immerse myself into the culture. I can say with confidence that if I grew up in that culture I would not my be the same person I am today because of the fact that they are a collectivistic country and that would change my outlook on myself and the community around me. At around my second birthday my family and I decided to move to the United States in search of a better quality of life. With the windows down, the crisp, cool summer air permeated throughout my body, acquiring every hair to stand at attention. Buffalo surrounded and granged lazily through the corn fields that shot high to the sky, as if every row was assembled soldiers getting ready to march. South Dakota is known for open fields with a consumed, laid back lifestyle with not much ever going on. Going into the trip knowing this, I was not in the least bit excited. It was when I absorbed the laid back atmosphere and appreciated every single bit of their way of life.…

I was driving down Montana 28. Legally Blonde was blaring through my speakers as I looked at the beautiful scenery. I was only 2 hours from Glacier National Park, which sounded like nothing after my grueling 10 hours leading up to that point. Suddenly my car slowed to a stop. I couldn’t go above 3 mph.…

“we keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths” - Walt Disney. I’ve had three big moves in my life that had been hard for me, but not as much as this recent big move to San Antonio. It was a sunny, humid day in Edinburg, Tx and I was texting my best friend Mariela while she was home sick when my Mother texted my brother, sister and I that we were moving to San Antonio. I instantly became so full of anger because my mother wanted to move us away again after only moving to Edinburg six years ago.…

There isn’t anything more breathtaking than going Up North. If you’re not from Michigan you might be wondering, “Where up north?” In Michigan we use “up north” as a term for the upper half of the mitten, I’d say from the top of the thumb up. The UP (Upper Peninsula) can be considered Up North but normally it's just the UP.…

Growing up in Maine had so many advantages from the beautiful scenery to the unique qualities Mainers have. I can't say that I'm not blessed to have grown up in such a beautifully scenic place, but I can't say it's been easy. I'm originally from land-locked Indiana. I moved to Maine when I was younger with my parents and brother and as much as I love being from a different place it's been hard growing up without a close family in a state so closely tied together with their families. Growing up in Maine, especially Mid-Coast Maine, you know that all of the surrounding families have lived there for generations, everybody knows everybody, cousins go to school together, and siblings work together.…

Place is needed to stabilize and orient us as families, community members and citizens. I agree with McClay and McAllister that the connections to a physical place are important. If we no longer hold importance to place then we will no longer have a sense of identity as members of a community. Place plays a necessary role in building the basis for people to find individual identity. A place that one identifies as “home” serves as “an anchor for our memories”(Solnit 139).…
