Personal Narrative: My Physical Science Class

Improved Essays
I was in 10th grade at the time in my physical science class. I didn't have many friends, all I focused on was my schoolwork and my extracurricular activities. The girl that sat beside me was quite diffident, she never spoke to me unless she had a question about something. I noticed her different ethnicity, hispanic, which interested me. I find it unique to have different ethnicities joining all in one place. I watched her struggle throughout this class, and the grades she received were distressful. One day we had just received our grades for a unit test. The teacher preferred calling out the grades in front of the class thinking it would motivate us to do better on his tests. The young hispanic quietly whispered into my ear after class that day that she needed help and wondered if I could help her. Aroused by this opportunity, I cleared several days on my schedule to help her. I began tutoring her after school, expanding her knowledge on the concepts we learned in class. The drive behind this girl opened my eyes and made me realize how truly smart she was when she applied herself. The following month we …show more content…
“You mexican cheated off of Aly”, “No way a hispanic can make a 91.” At this moment it was time for me to stand up for her. I knew she felt like whatever she had to say wouldn’t matter, being overruled by the other people in this classroom. The look on her face shouted minority. Her ethnicity set her apart from the others, not in a bad way, but to these harsh people it was an excuse to shame her due to their jealousy. I stood up from my desk and explained to the class about the drive this girl had behind her, about how i had been studying with her for weeks, exploring her intelligence she had no clue she had. Angered at this situation, I pulled the girl's arm up to mine. I showed the class that skin color was what they were judging her on right now, ethnic backgrounds,

In Academic Profiling: Latinos, Asian American, and the Achievement Gap, by Gilda Ochoa, it describes how a focus on the achievement gap, can cause harm to both Latina/Latino and Asian American students by ignoring systematic and structural injustices that maintain “binary” and “hierarchical” thinking. One of her arguments is that the achievement gap gives off a mirage that inequality is being managed by moving the focus to “high-stakes testing”. According to her bibliography Gilda L. Ochoa lives in Southern California. She enjoys reading, writing, and running. She is also a professor of sociology and Chicana/Chicano and Latina/Latino studies at Pomona College.…

Upon entering my 1st grade classroom, students are welcomed into a multicultural, yet simple world. There are a few maps on the wall and a globe in a corner, and some family photos on my desk. A few simple plants, some with colorful flowers, are placed around the classroom. The seating arrangements include circular tables, with four-to-five students at each table, for work in groups.…

My parents have said to work hard and do my best in school. I never understood why until I got older. The reason they told me to do my best in school was because they wanted me to think about school and my future. Both of my parents didn't get the chance to go to college. They both came to the United States looking for what most people come to the United States for ‘The American Dream’, they wanted a place where they could raise their children and find a stable job.…

The school that I attended was a primarily white student school with about one tenth of each grade being Hispanic. Our teaching staff was also primarily white with a few Hispanic teachers in the whole school. During school, we were all in the same classes. In my Spanish class, my teacher used the opportunity of having a mixed class to her advantage. When we were allowed to pick our own groups, she encouraged that the Hispanics and the white kids worked together instead of being separated.…

My entire life I have had to fight to prove that I belong. Being half Mexican and half white is hard. I have to prove to the White Americans that I belonged, that I was one of them, and I had to prove to the Mexicans that I did not abandon my culture, my roots, or my language. I had to be more American than the Americans and more Mexican than the Mexicans just to prove I belonged. I go to a college prep school where only 26% of the students identify as culturally diverse.…

My earliest memories involve my father talking joyously about the paper he was working on to my mother. In the years to follow I was included into these conversations, minimally at first, but soon I would be receiving most of it. To my pleasure once I began homeschooling I was almost instantly enrolled in an introductory mechanics class with some laboratory work. Although this class was incredibly fun and intriguing, it was not until I took my first proper physics class with Professor Walter Lewin that I truly fell in love with physics. During the introduction Professor Lewin said something that would stay with me during and following the course, he claimed that during and after this course I would view the world in a completely different manner,…

This paper has made me think a lot of how my culture has affected me not just in school, but also in my everyday living. I am originally from Guanajuato, Mexico but I have been in the United States for almost 16 years. During these 16 years coming and going from the United States to México I have been able to see a great deal of cultural diversity. Coming into the United States at an age of 5 was something that I was eye opening to me when I go into the school system here and see students that didn’t seem normal to my viewing.…

I completed my ten-hour class observation at the private school Georgia Military Prep. The Georgia Military Prep School is located on Georgia Military College’s main campus in Milledgeville. At GMC prep I observed Ms. Jennifer Spencer's advanced eighth grade math class. Ms. Spencer has a decidedly pleasant air about her, a quick smile, and a brisk step that belies her ‘let us get the job done’ type attitude. On my first day observing her class, I soon gathered that Ms. Spencer always has a goal in mind when she sets foot in the classroom.…
