Monsters exist in books and movies, yet they also live in real life. For children, monsters appear to be one thing, while for adults it is another. The first time I have “seen” a monster was when I was 5 years old. At that time, I did not enjoy being in the dark during bedtime. I was asleep when I heard a very deep voice.…

My experience with the after school book club at Madison Elementary today was an exciting yet my patience was tested by a seven year old little boy named Jose. Today I was excited to see if my group would enjoy the book, “Where the Wild Things Are,” due to the fact everyone agreed they enjoy reading adventure books. Consequently, one of my group members, Jose, had already read the book and watched the movie and let the whole group know it was “boring.” Already bored he instantly lost interest in the book and the group and was making it known by distracting the other group members around him. Usually his partner in crime, Gilbert, agrees with him and goes along with him but this time was different and he ignored his friend because he was actually…

Another hot summer in Idaho at another family reunion. I chased after my dad and brother’s cloud of dust; reving my ATV’s (all terrain vehicle) engine I whipped around the land my great great uncle homesteaded on. My confidence grew as did my speed until my wheel caught and spun me right into a log that pierced through the fender and into my leg. It was the first time I ever blacked out. When I came too a few seconds later I was alone; high on the trails of the Sawtooth mountains, blood gushing from my shin.…

I sat there in the hard seat of my desk and waited patiently. The scent of Lysol was overwhelmingly powerful in the room, but I knew by the third week it would be overpowered by the smell of musty children and chalk dust. I could not wait for my new teacher to saunter up to me, eyes full of admiration, and give me my paper. I had worked hard on it for nearly two months during the summer prior to this new school year. Looking around the room at my new classmates, it was easy to tell who had done the summer assignments, especially with their conspicuous faces.…

In third grade, a boy named Blake - a notorious troublemaker - would chase every girl during class trying to kiss her on the lips. Most of the girls gave in eventually. It was easier to give in than to keep running. When it was my day to be chased, I turned to him, grabbed his glasses off his pudgy face, and stomped on them in front of all the kids on the blacktop. He ran to the principal's office and cried.…

Almost two years ago now, we met again for the second time in our lives. You found me (a teenager) which like many others before been neglected as a kid. Walked around with the belief that I'd never know what it felt like to be loved, so I closed off my heart and made it impenetrable. Believing that if I stayed emotionless I could endure and survive any loss or pain, manipulation. You were warmth and compassion.…
