Joseph Campbell stated, “You have a growing ego consciousness with which you identify yourself, and this is developing in relation to the costumes you have to put on, the personae” (72). Who am I as an individual? There are so many aspects of what has influenced me as a person, and a woman of color. The process of my enculturation began at birth .I was born in 1990.The year is important because, in the early 90’s many people were still very biased about biracial and multiracial children. My ethnic background is Asian, and black-Hispanic. I was also adopted by Caucasian parents, and had an East Indian brother. It was 1997 during a hot Nevada summer is when I came to the realization as to what significant impact persona really has. I first learned the word "mixed" when I was enrolled in elementary school. I was an eight year old girl with ambiguous facial features, caramel tone skin, and a head full of dark wavy/curly hair. I spoke perfect English, but knew some Spanish, French, and Chinese. The neighborhood I grew up in and the elementary school I went to was predominately white upper middle class. Social class wasn’t an issue for me. Nonetheless, my ethnicity and family dynamics were different than my peers. At school, I was soon struggling to fit in.

The air would fill with the aroma of the sweet scent of desert sage and rain. It was during this time my parents would have heart to heart conversations with me. My parents were always loving, concerned, not quick to over-react, patient, and strong enough to let me learn by my mistakes. They taught me that our family values are to have no prejudices. Those values have always stayed with me. I strongly believe not to have a preconceived preference of society or any

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz debuts a character named Oscar who struggles between exhibiting two identities; that of a Dominican, and that of a nerd.” In Dominican culture, being a true dominican man requires an alpha mentality through life, especially in the realm of public appearance and within the world of picking up women. On the other hand, a nerd is labeled as someone who exhibits none of those qualities and is generally more interested in non-social hobbies such as reading comic books, or playing video games on a constant basis. Oscar’s attempt to blend two different cultures into one in order to establish his own unique identity made me reminisce on the early days in my life, in which I too, also struggled between exhibiting two different identities. Unlike Oscar, both of my identity issues stick within the realm of race and heritage.…

Identity is like a deciduous tree that goes through all the seasons; it is ever changing. As individuals, we grow and we tend to adapt depending on the circumstances, along with the environment that surrounds us. But, like trees, we also manage to wither, especially when occasional obstacles come our way. We are infinitely being shaped and molded as individuals, as we stroll through the road of life. In Amy Tan 's essay, "Mother Tongue" and Zora Neale Hurston 's piece, "How It Feels to Be Colored Me" the authors explores the concept of identity and how their own identities are formed by the embrace of their personal life experiences.…

As a young child, I was always unsure if I was more American or Chinese, or even both. I didn’t feel like I fit into any of those categories.…

For both theories, I will provide an overview and also present how they related to my own development of these identities. Social-Cognitive Theory of Gender Identity…

Although I did not realize at the time, growing up in an African American household and living in an American society had created a gap in my self-identity. I had thought birthplace determined nationality, but in reality, nationality comes from both beliefs and perceptions.…

Personal Statement I grew up in a mainly Hispanic household, where all we spoke was Spanish. When I was hanging out with my friends I spoke more English than Spanish. As a kid, the transition was hard to get used to, but I grew older it became easier day by day. Also changing my personality to be more outgoing and creative to adjust to the life of a high student, was difficult since I used to be quiet and self-conscience. What made me different from everyone was that I became great at writing stories from any genre.…

Society may see me as only a white, Christian, lower-class, female but when I dig a little deeper, things begin to connect in ways I can’t believe. In this paper I will answer one question, what is my cultural identity? This includes a lot of different feathers such as family, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and more. I believe that everything I have done, seen, said, and been through in my life has helped to shape my personality into the individual I am today. “Cultural identity is considered a special case of social identity pertaining to the ideals and values of the cultural in-group with which the person identifies (Ferguson et al., 2016, Schwartz, Montgomery, & Briones, 2006, p. 10)”.…

Likewise, my personality and appearance in fourth grade had conformed to the cultural identity which was reflected by the majority of the class.…
