On that day I took on a name that bridged the gap between myself and the long past Mexica culture. I received the name Maquizcoatl from the Calpulli Ocelotl Cihuacoatl, and by extension my ancestors. In Nahuatl it means double headed serpent but to me it stands for the connection to my ancestors. Being a part of the Mexicanidad, a community that encompasses academic and community based educational programs including workshops, lectures, and dances, has allowed me to read see and live what was left behind by them and also discover my interest in helping others. The greatness of their achievements, in all areas of spirituality and academics, lives on in me and is something that I have and will continue to learn and grow from.
