Personal Narrative: My Personal Identity

I am a mixture. A mixture of the habits I have developed from those closest to me, the cultures of my ancestors and my parents, along with interests that are ever growing. Among these there are a few that were instrumental in the discovery of both myself and what my future held in store. For the past 17 years I have grown up in a household that was much larger than one roof could cover. I was raised by my parents, my tías, and my teachers, and from each have learned something valuable. Through them I have heard every one liner, each filled with wisdom, and taken them all to heart; ‘respect your elders’, ‘think before you speak and act’, and ‘give without expectations’. I learned from their struggles, accomplishments, mistakes, and through their guidance the importance of making moral and rational judgements about people and decisions, the importance of independence, and the same of selflessness. On that day I took on a name that bridged the gap between myself and the long past Mexica culture. I received the name Maquizcoatl from the Calpulli Ocelotl Cihuacoatl, and by extension my ancestors. In Nahuatl it means double headed serpent but to me it stands for the connection to my ancestors. Being a part of the Mexicanidad, a community that encompasses academic and community based educational programs including workshops, lectures, and dances, has allowed me to read see and live what was left behind by them and also discover my interest in helping others. The greatness of their achievements, in all areas of spirituality and academics, lives on in me and is something that I have and will continue to learn and grow from.
