The Personal Giving Journal

The recipient I choose was World Vision, I found it after doing an extensive research online. I wanted to give only a certain amount and Word Vision was the only one who accepted. Additionally, World vision was the only charity I found that supported the restoration of the Caribbean, due to the destruction of the recent hurricanes. Giving this agency made me feel as though am contributing to the efforts to restore the Caribbean though little. I will be very honest, I wanted to give 10 dollars and most of the agencies I could find specifically stated, we only accept the minimum of 20 dollars. I am not shore what the policy was; however, first thing that appalled me was the minimum 20 dollars. Why Can’t I give how much I want? World Vision was the one that accepted my 10-dollar donation. I know that sound frugal, giving 10 dollars and behaving as though I am giving a million dollars. However, I feel though that my money is valuable and though its 10 dollars I worked very hard for it, so giving that money is very important for me.

I didn’t want any charity to have my information and send me coupons asking for money continually. I just wanted to make a one-time payment. It took sometime but after looking at the donor information screen, I decided to give my real name; it took me long enough. Things get real once I got to the payment method page, Should I give my Visa or my MasterCard. I was reluctant because I did not trust the website, although there was a padlock on the URL stating it is a secure

The first essay I read is written by Charles Kenny “Haiti Doesn’t Need Your Old T-Shirt”, in Kenny’s essay, he argues that those who are in need would rather receive money instead of clothes, food and other necessities. As I was reading this essay, I question the validity of his arguments, does giving money solve these problems? I do think that when we give money to developing countries it is advantageous, however Kenny’s theme throughout his essay “bottom line: giving donations of cash are nearly always more effective” (254). I feel that his thought and claims are highly subjective. Kenny talks of organizations such as the NFL, World Vision, and British NGO and how these organizations donate to “SWEDOW” (Stuff we don’t want).…

Everyone can say that they always imagined or wanted to look up to someone whether if the person was famous or related to them. Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. Charity does exist, but not in the sense which Feinberg speaks of it. Feinberg speaks about “duties of charity,” but this is where Feinberg errs. While there certainly is such a thing as charity there is no such thing as a duty to be charitable. Inserting a legal duty into the equation nullifies any charitable action. For instance, if the government taxes me to take care of the poor this is not charitable.…

When one thinks of a charity, what comes to mind? Most likely, an organization or a group of people that receive donations to help improve the quality of lives of others, whether it be by letting a terminal child live out their last wish, or furthering research on battling a fatal disease.
