Personal Narrative: My Personal Experience With Clinical Depression

Improved Essays
“Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems.” (Mayo Clinic 2015) Depression is considered an illness because it is a patient’s personal experience with a certain disease. (Dr. Latham’s Lecture notes) I personally was diagnosed with depression in 2011. I started to see a psychiatrist due to some major family issues that caused a misbalance in my life and caused me to spin into a period of deep depression. After being diagnosed with depression it created changes in my behavior due to the assignment of the meaning to my illness. …show more content…
(Dr. Latham’s Lecture notes 8/26/2015) My experience with depression day to day would differ depending on the workload I had and how I was feeling that day. Some days were worse than others, but I still managed to get what was needed done. My social interactions were very limited due to my illness and my friends and family would wonder about me because they weren’t aware of my diagnosis. I kept my diagnosis a secret because I felt that I could keep it managed without worrying my friends and family. My social structure and support system allowed me to overcome my depression without medication. My cultural values and norms allowed me to believe that medication isn’t always the solution for every disease and that I could manage my illness without the medication that was usually prescribed in situations like the one that was presented. Depression is one of the diseases, in my opinion, that is stigmatized due to its uncertainty among many members of society. Since the field is so broad for depression, I feel as if many people see depression as a way for people to escape their daily lives with an excuse portrayed as an illness. An example we talked about in class involved the sick role and the illness career and how a doctors note is seen as an essential part of confirming your illness and with it you are dismissed from your everyday roles due to your illness. Once that label of “depression” is imposed on a person, it is very difficult for this person to escape the box they’ve been put it. It would start to act as a confirmation bias, in which every single feeling of sadness or emptiness is just a result of his or her depression. “Oh, I’m feeling sad right now because I’m a depressed person.” It would make sense that this thought would travel through someone’s head after finding out that they’ve been diagnosed with depression. They would associate every single sad feeling with their…

Suffering from a severe depressive episode or having suicidal thoughts usually makes the victim feel completely isolated. Watching a friend or loved one suffer from a mental health problem is also tremendously painful. My goal in writing this is to help people who have not experienced clinical depression understand what a depressive episode is like, and help them be as supportive as they can to a friend or loved one suffering from a mental disturbance. Throughout the past few years of my life, I've suffered from clinical depression. Freshman year, my formerly happy personality faded and was replaced with a bitter, sad one. I was so scared; I didn't understand why I was hurting so much or that it wasn't my fault. However, I felt that reaching out for help would be even scarier than facing what was going on in my mind. I felt my thoughts were so awful and different from everyone else’s that anyone I told would just look at me in disgust, reiterating what a terrible person…

I awake to a narrow beam of sunlight that penetrates the closed shades of the window in my dorm room. It lets me know it is late in the morning if not already afternoon, but the time means little to me. I am still unable to vocalize this feeling I awake with so often. I know only that the prospect of getting out of bed feels insurmountable. I roll under my covers for a few more minutes of sleep, but when I look at the clock again, hours have passed.…

Mental illness is a sensitive subject that few people are comfortable talking about. Despite its touchy nature, mental illness is an unfortunate part of life that many people are exposed to, either through knowing a loved one suffering from mental illness, or that they have this type of disease themselves.
