Personal Narrative: My Personal Experience Of Water

Improved Essays
We are wet, cold, and scared. The choppy water making us all feel sick. I clench my stomach trying to hold down the seasickness. I can see the others are trying to as well but Diehl and Ricker are unsuccessful. I can smell the powder in the air mixed with the saltwater. My stomach drops with each whooshing sound of a bomb going off. Water keeps coming over the sides, drenching us even more. I couldn’t sleep last night, my mind constantly going back to Thanksgiving. For the first time in years my whole family had been together to sit and eat Ma’s apple pie. My senses are on overload and I can’t get my hands to stop shaking. I look around trying to see the faces of the boys I’ve been with, but all their eyes are fixated on the floor of the ship.

While reading David Foster Wallace's "This is Water," I realized how much I understood what he was communicating. I was thinking why the young fish did not ask the older fish what water is. The young fish could have learned something new. Maybe the young fish did not want to embarrass itself because the way the older fish asked the question makes it seem like every fish should know what water is. The young fish did ask the other young fish, but they are probably friends and have the same intelligence level.…

Be Considerate In the article This is Water by David Foster Wallace he talks about our daily lives, as he says, “day in and day out”. He also explains how we as humans think selfishly without actually taking the time out to rethink situations we come in contact with everyday. Not that we do this on purpose, it’s that we are programmed this way. Learning how to think around the annoying, irritating, and foolish circumstances in life is one way to control what we think and how we feel.…

When your conception of the world is limited by your solidarity as a person. Your solidarity skews your perception of the reality that you are perceiving. The fact of reality ties to the fabric of reality, and every minor variable is taken in to account in the equation of the creation of that fabric. A soda, left to fend for itself on a wall. May be a product of ones lack of care for the environment, a casualty in a bigger drama amongst someone’s life, or even a coincidental landing from a storm.…

Water I love getting whisked away into stories of adventures and heroism. Stories that made you look at our world and seem to think it was so astonishing yet so simple, that we were yet to create the futuristic tools books spoke of. Or that we were yet to find the magic that was hidden underneath all the layers of science. I was the only one in my family who had the love for the alternate realities that everyone spoke of. That was before my step father came in.…

It's scary being alone and even scarier when you don't know where you are. The only more terrifying thing than that is adding something traumatic to top it off, for instance, drowning. On that day I learned that there was a difference between knowing how to tread water and swimming on the surface. I was at the river with my dad and my brother and the river dropped off as I took a step. I was swept down stream for what seemed like an hour eventually being caught by a stranger and brought to sore.…

I used to go take a shower at night around 5 pm, it was this curfew I had. My parents put it in place because they were tired of me taking hour long baths. I would first step into the tub basked in an artificial white light, and turned on the water. For the first couple of minutes, I would let the water just run, because it took a while for the water to heat up. Once it did, however, I began to push down on the water stopper.…

I have given much thought to my journey and exposure to preaching. I have to admit that most of the preaching exposure I had growing up is quite different from my current theological and personal understanding of what preaching is or ought to be, if it is going to be effective. Growing up in a legalistic environment, most of the preaching I heard depicted God as some type of warden ready to punish people at the first sign of misbehavior. Most of the preaching revolved around the do’s and don’ts of Christianity. Whether the preacher or pastor was intentional about this or not, his preaching influenced people to share the same message and tactics within their sphere of influence.…
