Obesity is an undeniable problem going on in the world, but the the obesity dilemma can be fixed very simply with implementing healthy diet in their lives. Almost two years ago, I went to the doctor for my normal checkup, except this time, it felt terribly long. My doctor and a few others stepped in the room with grins on their faces. They announced that I was now Type 1 Diabetic. I had only learned about diabetes in health class, and that discussion was extremely brief. With a blood sugar of 700, I was directly admitted to the emergency room.…

I will never forget the call from my grandmother, a 75-year-old male, fatigued and short of breath, with a medical history of diabetes, heart failure, and chronic obstructive respiratory disorder. As I rush to his side, he was lethargic, and struggling with each breath. In an attempt to apply his BiPAP machine, his condition continued to worsen at which point I called for an ambulance. The patient was a retired major from the U.S. Marine’s, better known around my house as “Papa”. As I walked into yet another ICU room to see him hooked to a mirage of tubes, wires, and machines, my instinct to help wanted to take over, yet I could only stand and watch helplessly.…

Personal Responsibility and Obesity Jim Rohn once said, “You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself. That is something you have charge of.” In our busy lifestyles, it becomes easy to lose track of what is important such as our health, and instead of blaming ourselves, we choose to blame others. Obesity is a major issue in our society due to lack of education, healthy eating, and money, and in order to solve this issue, we must first take responsibility of our own actions.…

Earlier this year in January, I decided to start my weight loss journey. I managed to get rid of thirty-seven pounds throughout a period of six months. Along with a massive change of physical appearance, this journey also generated a lot of mixed responses from my family and friends. I heard many comments such as, “look at your bones sticking out of your shoulders stop now, you look unhealthy,” but also, there were others that said, “you look amazing, congratulations, you deserve it”. This giant wave of fluctuating comments got me thinking: what is the difference between looking healthy and looking good?…

Eating Healthy Last week when I went to the grocery store, I found that the price of food was a little bit on the expensive side. As I walked through the aisles of the store I heard a voice behind me saying that trying to eat healthy is like a luxury, you know like getting your hair done. You do not need it, but you want it. We both chuckled and parted ways. Then, I started thinking that if I really wanted to eat healthy then it is worth paying the price.…
