Personal Narrative: My Personal Culture

Improved Essays
What defines me, is it my past or my present? I have often asked myself this very question many times. Whatever the case, there are virtues that run throughout my life that are unmistakable. I believe that these encapsulate in the most simplest of ways, my true nature. Generally speaking, personal culture is the set of principles or morals to which a person runs his/her life, their own personal set of rules or guidelines. This culture can be cultivated over time and fashioned in any way. However, my father, Rick Anderson, had the greatest impact on the development of my personal culture. He still to this day influences the decisions I make, like a voice that rings in my head. He taught me great values and character. The virtues that form the …show more content…
*Love comes in many forms and is modeled uniquely for everyone. I was very lucky in my early years to have some people in my life who honestly and deeply loved and cared about me. For example, I believe that one of the first people who truly taught me what love is all about was my younger brother Eric. We spent the majority of our free time together. When we were younger we played together, laughed together, and fought together. We formed a bond of love that has lasted our entire lives. My brother is someone I can count on to be there for me no matter what happens to me in life and I know he will love me unconditionally and I will always love him. On the other hand, love taught me to be blind to individual differences as was the case with my dog Karma. I loved that dog completely and wholeheartedly. She was a giant, purebred Rottweiler. She taught me patience, acceptance, and so much more. I weathered many rough storms anchored by the love of that dog because Karma loved me so

When I was 9-10 years old I lived with my mom, dad, and sister in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. Lake Ariel was a small town where all you would see is corn, fields, and woods. We had lived in this house for two years and I had a good group of friends that I had met from school or extracurricular activities. I attended Western Wayne Hamlin elementary school and was in fourth grade. The school district was huge, covering six townships, but my school was small.…

When asked to define myself in one paper, I find it hard to show the details that I want to in the right light. When asked about my future after high school, I also have a hard time describing everything I want to get done because there are far too many things to name. The quote “ _____” (i want to be everyone and do everything and there isn’t enough life to do it all in) describes me to a tee, and I believe this college is the place I could do this in. Being a shy person for most of my life, many things were difficult for me. Specifically, last summer I had the opportunity for a summer job.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

My own cultural competency is built on a lifetime of experiences. I grew up in Appalachia Kentucky. As an elementary student, we moved to the rural area of Harrison, Ohio where I was exposed for the first time to a culture that was foreign to the way I had been raised. As I entered the working environment, I found myself a female working through the “glass ceiling.” In addition, I have lived in various states, so I was introduced to cultures different from my own.…

My cultural background is probably one of the most important things to me. My family came to the United States from Ludwigshafen, Germany decades ago, and although I personally have never travelled out of the country, I've always cherished how in touch we are with our roots. Eating homemade Spritzgebäck every Christmas while waiting for Christkind to arrive, gathering around to hear Oma read the classic, albeit terrifying, children's stories from der Struwwelpeter, and dancing to polka music around my house are just a few of my favorite memories. My great-grandmother, who I call "Oma", is the main reason that I have such a huge interest in learning about my heritage. She has been through so much throughout her lifetime and I have immense gratitude for the opportunity to hear her stories firsthand.…

I feel like my cultural identity is best served with something sweet. My favorite dessert that my late grandmother used to make for the family or friends called “cascaron”. Cascaron is a Filipino dessert that is basically dough balls, made of coconut, flour, and water mixed and deep fried until it’s golden brown then covered with syrup of sugar. When you look at cascaron it’s all golden brown ball with glazed with syrup. What people don’t realize until they take a bite of it, that it’s white and chewy like mochi on the inside.…
