Personal Narrative: My Personal Code Of Ethics

Ethics are very important as they are an essential part of basic civilized society. My personal code of ethics dictates how I live my life, it shapes the way I see the world and the way I behave. My core values shape my attitude and behavior, they motivate and inspire me to be better.
The core values I follow are compassion, love, patience and prudence. Compassion is the emotion we feel in response to suffering. There are two types of compassion, self-compassion and compassion for others. To express compassion to others we first must have compassion for ourselves. Self-compassion recognizes that feeling inadequate and failing are a part of living. Noting that everyone fails and everyone suffers we should show ourselves compassion

Love comes in many forms and is felt in many different states and attitudes. One may have love for life, for people, for animals, for beautiful things and so forth. Love can also be a virtue. I choose to use it as a virtue in this context. Love is “the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another”. (Merriam-Webster.com). When you are able to love in this manner you will improve not only your life but the life’s of others around you. Acting in an unselfish manor allows you achieve a greater feeling of self-worth. My ethical perspective aligns closely with John Stuart Mill. He argued that utilitarianism is generally best in most cases. He loosely stated that telling a lie in one situation might be what is best for all but telling lies in general is wrong. He developed a four step analysis of ethical problems. First, one most identify the issue or action under consideration. Second, we must specify all who will be affected by our action.
