Personal Narrative: My Personal Challenges

Improved Essays
One personal challenge I've endured occurred when my brother and father were placed in mental hospitals. As my first year of high school came to a close, both my brother and father wound up in mental hospitals within the same month. A domino effect, my brother first and my father not long behind. My brother was in his last year of high school, one day during class something switched off in his head. The reasoning behind it remains a mystery even to him. One day he was taken to a hospital by an ambulance, I didn't see him for a week. Though, when I did get to see him he seemed to be completely like himself. However, when he was permitted to come home, he was kept on heavy medication. He was in a complete daze, he looked as if he was always asleep even when he ate. …show more content…
It's an impossible memory to shake seeing your older brother cry and hug you for support when his own mind has taken a break. Ultimatly, both doctors and relatives concluded that their break downs formed from pent up stress. My father didn't deal well with my brother being sent off into a mental hospital. Rather than a quick change out of the blue, my father's sanity slowly slipped away. He would sing and shake, and hug me constantly. Hugging wasn't a thing my father ever did. And one day he became violent and I had to convince my mother that it was time for him to go to the hospital too. They were both diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Though, neither of them had prior signs. Now, a few years later, my brother has completely recovered and my father has never quite been the same. My mother will talk of how she misses what my father used to be, before the medication and before he went the hospital. ersonal ChaBoth remain on

My key life lessons are that nothing beats hard work and if you treat others with respect, they will generally treat you with respect. Hard work and effort are the main aspects that lead to “lucky” things happening. Good things don’t just fall into people’s laps, the ones that have the most “luck” generally are those that put in the most effort and work. Also, I have learned that when you truly respect those around, they will respect you back and life is much easier when you aren’t doing things behind each other’s backs.…

Since that day my dad has been off and on with his anxiety attacks but none being too unbearable until recently. Within the last couple of months my father had huge burst of anger and sadness all come out in one night. It was the first time I have ever seen my father cry and it was probably the worst anxiety attack he’d had since the one when I was 7 or 8. It was a Friday night and it started off pretty bad because my sister ran into one of my friend’s cars while pulling out of our driveway.…

A weakness that I have is that I do not know how to say no to individuals that ask me for help since I love to help people. It is important that I learn to say no when helping others gets in the way of me accomplishing my tasks. It is important that I do both, but not when I run the risk of not meeting my deadlines and me staying late hours after work to get my work done. It has not been an easy task saying no, but I am learning to be okay with saying no because it is important that it does not interfere with my responsibilities.…

Aging Shoes I slowly took out my father’s old shoes, covered with dust, from the antique shoe cabinet and started to clean and shine them with my bare hands. While cleaning them, I turned my head to see where my father was; he was resting on the sofa, like always, gazing at the television screen. However, he was staring at it vacantly, especially without any emotion. I wiped away the tears dripping down, and turned back to focus on my work.…

My family immigrated to Los Angeles as refugees to escape the Iran-Iraq war, relying on welfare and loans for a better life, but only ending up in bankruptcy. Our home was filled with emotional tension and aggressive exchanges, making it difficult to address the family’s mental health issues brought on by past traumas. The most extreme of which was my sister’s untreated schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Although the youngest, I provided her care throughout my time in high school and college; she required 24-hour care during manic episodes that involved hiding medication in her food and guarding her door to prevent her from running out of the house. My emotional stability and drive to persevere during this period came from an unlikely place:…

It is very hard to explain a mental illness to a child; so my parents had a very hard job on their hands raising me, along with my two older brothers. From a young age my mother and best friend recall me acting different from most children. I had a list of ten questions I had to ask every night before going to sleep, and if they were not answered I would make myself physically sick, or wet the bed in fear that those around me would end their lives because I wasn’t capable of getting answers. I had delusions, hallucinations, and sever headaches, which then lead to CAT scans and x-rays to make sure there were no tumors or blockages in my head. It was much later in life that my physician, along with psychologist, realized that I was bi-polar.…

I realize the way that helped me heal isn’t really something I can hope to replicate since it was so unconventional. I would hope to create a similar outcome in a different way. I think what would have helped me would have been having a strong support system. I would instead attempt to pull everyone closer together to overcome whatever happened.…
