Personal Narrative: My Personal Addiction

Improved Essays
I am fully aware of my personal addiction, it is one that I began forming at a young age. As a toddler I recall drinking coffee from my grandfathers’ cup as I would sit on his lap. As the years continued a cup of Joe was what I ordered when out to breakfast with my family, it made me feel grown-up. Throughout my high school years, I would proceed to the teachers’ lounge to make myself a mug of steaming java, while assisting teachers in grading papers before other students arrived. Nevertheless, it has never been an issue that I was concerned with, especially beings as stated in the Tablelands Advertiser, it is considered “socially acceptable” in society (2014, p. 11). I have even had times that I completely avoided coffee, despite the belief …show more content…
Nevertheless, I do feel that the intensity of my biological, psychological, social, and spiritual responses were affected by my current life circumstances as well. Without going into too much detail, there are currently an array of stress factors that impacted my reaction, such as a separation, a traumatic event in my sons’ life, and my personal ongoing battle with depression. Nonetheless, I know that the withdrawal symptoms I experienced would have been present with or without these factors, although, I feel they would have been less …show more content…
Considering that “chemical dependency,” “withdrawal can lead to symptoms associated with delirium tremors,” “profuse sweating,” as well as “delusions and hallucinations,” I would conclude that my biological response was not nearly as intense as one undergoing “sudden drug withdrawal” (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2017). Nevertheless, it is evident to me that this assignment offers a mild glimpse into the struggles faced in the withdrawal stages of refraining from substance dependency, such as the headaches, the depression, and the irritability I endured. Additionally, it is also apparent to me that as is stated in in the “Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection,” that overstimulation of dopamine which is created through the use of substances, including caffeine, create “feelings of extreme well-being,” which for some may result in seeking “the intense experience again and again” (2017). Thus, resulting in an

Even after pro-longed periods of sobriety when the withdrawal symptoms have decreased, there is still a high risk of the individual relapsing. If it wasn’t for this, abusers could simply be locked up away from the drug until their withdrawal symptoms had died out. Instead, the last stage of drug use has been defined as dependence, “a term used to denote the presence of an acquired abnormal state wherein the regular administration of adequate amount of a drug has, through previous prolonged use, become requisite to physiologic equilibrium” (Moal & Koob, 2007). This dependence that occurs during drug use, the need for the feeling of normality, indicates a strong neurological influence. As a result of this influence, symptoms may be negatively expressed by the individual addicted to drugs, altering their daily…

Caffeine is found both naturally occurring, in food and beverages like chocolate and coffee, and is often added chemically to enhance soft drinks, energy drinks, and even some foods and candy with the same energetic buzz. According to a research report conducted in 2006, Americans drink roughly 145 milligrams per day per capita, with caffeine intake peaking around the ages of 40-60, at 225 milligrams for females and 295 milligrams for males. (Somogyi 48) Often, consumers joke around about “coffee addiction”, that joke has a little bit of truth to it, and many Americans are living with something called “caffeine dependence”. These amounts of caffeine are by no means close to the lethal limit, but as little as one cup of coffee a day can lead to dependence in a short…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

I am the youngest son of my mother’s six children. My experience with alcoholism begins in that I being forty seven years old, grew up watching my mother and father drink every day from as far back as I can remember. Alcohol seemed to be a part of everything we did from a weekend picnic at the park, to going to see the grandparents, someone drinking and getting drunk was the norm for me since a very young age. By the time I was eight, drinking had drove a wedge between my parents and they were heading down an ice covered slope towards divorce court. My parents separated, and for many years my mother was always at a tavern.…
