Peer Mentoring Experience

I had the pleasure of mentoring Nicole Boodhansingh, a freshman majoring in Dietetics. Our first initial meeting was at the meet and greet event held in Health South. We talked about her background in dietetics and what led her to choose not only deities as a major, but ASU as her college of choice. She grew up in San Diego, and worked as a diet clerk at a local nursing home and has shadowed several dieticians further sparking her interest in nutrition and dietetics. We talked about the adjustment of living on a college campus far from home, as well as her current work load. It was a bit hard to advise her about adjusting to college life since I did my first two years at a community college to get my prerequisites. I was able to point her to some pages she could follow on ASU social media and my ASU events page, so she can see what

We also discussed possible job types to have as a dietetic student that would be advantages in the future. Trying to find a job close by proved to be challenging as Nicole lives on campus and utilizes public transportation to move around. We went on to discuss possible volunteer opportunities that can be done throughout the semester. She asked about the dietetics internships specifically the masters ASU track one. I was able to confidently answer what the three different ASU internship were, and was able to explain the similarities and differences between the programs. We went on to later discuss DICAS and the application process for dietetic internships. I was able to answer the basic questions, but as a senior at ASU I have not done an application round with DICAS. Nicole also asked several questions

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

For the interview process, the two people that I interviewed were Martha Millison and Cecilia Rivas. Martha Millison is a school counselor at Green-Wood Charter School in Philadelphia and Cecilia Rivas is a CUA chief management supervisor. When both Martha and Cecilia came and spoke to our class, I was so intrigued by what they said that I wanted to know more about their work field. I especially found Martha job interesting because she works in a school setting and that’s where I want to work. I really enjoyed interviewing these two women because when I finish college I want to work with children and both Martha and Cecilia work with children in different ways.…

I met Andrea Seaberg two years ago when she was a senior at Detroit Lakes High School. She had been placed to work with me (a second grade teacher) from her School-To-Work advisor after she had told her that she was interested in becoming a teacher someday. Andrea and I hit it off immediately. She had the same love and energy that I feel I have as an educator. Needless to say, when she asked me to be her mentor throughout her schooling at Bemidji State University, I was thrilled.…

Below are the reasons and emotions of two students, Jessica Rocha-Da Silva and William Yan, who would like to nominate Marietta for a staff award. The first time I, Jessica Rocha-Da Silva, had met Marietta was back in first year. I had heard students, within my year, talk about her and how friendly she was. I decided to make an appointment with her and discuss a small problem I had about transferring courses.…

On Wednesday, September 9, 2015 I attended the Purdue Student Nursing Association club callout. It took place in Smith Hall (the building where they sell meat) at 6:30 in room 108. The meeting was approximately an hour and half long, and club president Ali Johnson welcomed those in attendance with pizza and enthusiasm. She informed us of the purpose of the club and increased my excitement for Purdue’s nursing programs and the opportunities available. PSNA does various fundraising activities including the scrub and stethoscope sale.…

My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. Even though it may be a very small interaction, I feel like I have made a small difference in their lives and I have helped them somehow.…

Semester of Learning Experiences People most always say, “ Learn from you mistakes and achievements.” I would definitely conclude that is exactly what I’ve done this first semester of college. There are many times that I wanted to simply curl into a ball because of all the newness and unfamiliarity. At times I found myself doing just that, but realizing that I needed to toughen up burst from my comfort zone. I can say sleeping through your classes never the best choice, not going just because you find it too easy, missing a class just to write a paper for another class, and differentiating between minimal and highly important status of choices.…

Background: Women who are incarcerated while pregnant, receive no birthing education while in most prisons in the United States. In many states, incarcerated women in labor are transported to the nearest birthing center and are shackled to the labor bed with one armed guard inside the room and another outside the door. They often labor alone because they are not allowed to have a support person. The nurse on duty, is the only form of support they depend upon. Unfortunately, evidence indicates that many of the nurses have a punitive attitude toward the incarcerated patient, resulting in inadequate care.…

My love for science has been demonstrated through my academic success, and I am confident in my ability to succeed in medical school. Along with my intellectual aptitude, my determination and compassionate nature drive me forward in my pursuit of becoming a physician. Furthermore, my desire to help others would benefit my peers because I hope to be a source of encouragement. I currently understand the struggles and stress other pre-med students face, and this is why after a difficult test or before a busy week my roommates and I plan something fun or eat desserts together.…

I attended the UCD School of Nursing interprofessional experience where treatment of domestic violence and substance abuse was addressed on two separate days. The first day of the seminar was very interesting to me because it was my first time learning about the signs of domestic violence. I was in a group that consisted of nursing students, and they were all very curious about my role as a Social Worker. They asked me questions such as, what I am currently doing at my internship and what made me interested in Social Work. I felt very connected with my group because the members were open to listen to me and they considered all my ideas during the exercises.…

As a graduating senior before the start of my last semester, my English professor Dr. T. Stavola, approached me with an opportunity of a lifetime. He was adamant about nominating me for the Student Pinnacle Award, which is annually given out during commencement. The Student Pinnacle Award is presented to the graduating student who exemplifies significant success in his/her academic field of study, and for being the most outstanding member of the graduating class. With this information I felt so humbled, and honoured for even being thought of as a possible nominee. Immediately I had to complete an extensive application, and a few months later, I received notice that I was selected for an interview as one of the top three candidates.…

My experience at Newcomer Academy has been extremely eye opening. Diversity can be challenging, but it provides many resources to any classroom. A stronger community is built between the children and teachers when the students’ backgrounds and cultures are embraced. I now appreciate the students’ little victories because that means that they are on their way to achieving bigger goals. My goals need to be individualized for each student and as long as they keep progressing and working hard, they will be able to succeed.…
