“You are something special, Joey. You will make a difference!” That is what my grandfather has said to me since I was in elementary school. He always believed in me, encouraged me, and supported me, even if I didn’t believe him. My Pawpaw Duke is a planner, a goal setter, a provider, and a teacher. He almost died last spring and I realized how much he continues to influence people, especially me. While he was in the hospital, I met one of his former students. He pulled me aside and told me how much my grandfather meant to him. He told me how my PawPaw had encouraged him when he didn’t have anyone or anything. Wow! Duke certainly made a difference. He taught me to have dreams and set goals. “If people don’t laugh at your dreams, they …show more content…
I played at church in Upward and then in Hill Country Youth League, but in 7th grade I began playing for the school and was forced to stop playing in youth leagues. However, I was given the opportunity to be an assistant coach and gladly accepted the offer. Ever since then I’ve been able to spend time with young kids and help develop their skills. It was great watching all of the kids build character along with their skills. Pat Riley once said, “It’s what you get from games you lose that’s extremely important.” Teaching those kids helped me become a leader, build character, and become a more humble player. When I grow up, I want to be just like you.” This little boy couldn’t know that my family was falling apart or that I was struggling with my faith. But, immediately I knew what I was called to do. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” God put me in that situation to show me what I needed to do with my life, and that is to coach the sport I love,

While growing up, sports have always been a big part of my life. At the age of only six years old, my parents first signed me up for coach pitch softball. Little did they know that I was going to fall in love with the game and that they were going to have to spend countless hours at softball fields during the spring each year watching me play. Being so young when I first started playing, winning and losing did not matter at all. As long as I got to throw, hit, and catch the ball, I was happy.…

I have always dreamed to be the next influential American for my generation. During my childhood I've always looked up to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, and Misty Copeland; all African Americans who influenced me to be the person I am today. Martin Luther King taught me that change is possible and if I fight for what’s right an impact will be made. Maya Angelou taught me that you can express yourself without being flamboyant, but through metaphors, empowerment and irony. Misty Copeland made me realize that I can be an African American girl who dances, and I can make it out of my county doing what I love.…

Coaches have the power to change lives. I can humbly say this as all my coaches, both good and bad, have taught me in some way what it takes to be a good athlete and most importantly how to be a good human being. They have taught me life lessons that I can only hope to preserve by instilling them into my athletes in my time as a coach. The articles I have chosen to highlight in this essay show how coaches have helped to develop character in athletes, how they pushed them to be the best on and off the field of play, and illustrate how they stepped into the lives of athletes and became so much more than just a coach.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

One thing that was stressed was the importance of giving back to those that come after me. Over the last three years I have done many things that help those around and in my community. One of the most recent events was during the summer during “Gospel Music Workshop of America”. The next event occurred after that was also in the summer in Brooklyn.…
