A community that creates learners to me are, different perspectives joined together to answer questions and comments about the epidemic of Philadelphia. To me, my thinking would not have been the same without my reading group, I would not have become the close reader that I am today. I think my reading has improved because I use better vocabulary and I can understand what I am reading. The reading strategies have helped me to become a better reader. I still rely on DJE, T2T like I did when I took basic reading as well. They are very helpful strategies that help me to read better and think about what I am reading. For this and other classes my goals are to understand what I am reading and being able to sum up what I read with very little difficulty.…

Now I could lie and make up stuff that made me like reading and writing but I see no point in that. Honestly I don’t have a lot of memories of reading and writing from when I was a little kid and I can tell you now that football hasn’t helped me at remembering those memories either. With that being said I do remember some memories, some are good and also bad.…

When I was a little girl I use to hate reading, it’s not that it was hard I just didn’t want to take the time to read and build up my knowledge. I was the opposite child in school all the kids could read the small basic words and not the hard big words; as for me I was the opposite I could read the hard big words and not the small basic words. As I grew up I started liking reading more, then I had gotten to Chase middle I did so much reading that when I read a good book I couldn’t put it down I had to read it until the end. My freshmen year I had learned how to do N.E.R.D. words and it was the first time I had ever done it and it was hard for me to get the concept of it but I finally got it.…

I second all of the points brought up by Chris in his responce to your incredible writing. I was deeply moved by your literacy narrative. By simply having the pleasure of spending the past month or so with you, I would have never known about the part of your life that you wrote so passionately about in your literacy narrative. I often find it so intriguing that everyone has a story that resonates so deeply with him or her. That is exactly why I think large projects such as Humans of New York (HONY) or class assignments such as this one are so important.…

When I was a child I always though about business. I wanted to know how things worked, how money worked. I started watching my grandfather write his invoices, deposit checks, talk to people as if he knew them but they had just met. I wondered how he did it, how he played his cards right and got people to hire him.…

For most students, the moment the bell rings for summer, they never speak to their teachers again. Usually this applies to me as well, but last year, it didn't. Ms. Dirmeyer, my 7th grade Language Arts teacher, still keeps in touch with me, even though she’s not my teacher anymore. She takes interest in my writing, and has done several things to help me improve. Ms. Dirmeyer sends me emails with writing tips, along with worksheets directed towards improving my writing.…

My talent is creating, and my form of creating is writing. Writing is a thing I've been doing since I was in the seventh grade. I started writing then because of a troublesome past, both my mother and my father had left my two other siblings and I all alone, leaving us with our uncle. It was very hard for me to adjust, I was fatigued and emotionally hurt, I turned to writing. My love for writing grew into a bigger part of my life when I kept dream journals.…

During and after the group project I got a better understanding of NAVAL and a better understanding of my group. For example, Lexi is the leader of the group and Camille is the worker bee meaning that she is the one to go to for the information about the presentation. There were many high points in the group such as when we completed are power point early and when we researched the information. I had a blast working with them. A low point was when the video couldn’t load and we had to start from scratch again.…

    K. Patricia Cross (1998). Learning communities are not only necessary but advantageous in that they allow people to construct knowledge working together cooperatively and interdependently (K. P. Cross, 1998). In his book The Fifth Discipline, Peter Senge calls for “a shift of mind … a place where people are continually discovering how they create their reality and how they can change it” (pp.12-13) (K. P. Cross, 1998). Author/MKA, sums it up by stating “learning communities are of high interest in higher education now because they are compatible with changing epistemologies about the nature of knowledge, because research generally supports their educational benefits, and because they help institutions of higher education meet their missions of educating students for their lives of work and service”. (K. P. Cross,…

I staggered backwards, head throbbing, unable to gain balance. The cold night air surrounded me, numbing my fingers as they pressed against my burning forehead. My blurry eyes could barely make out the shapes before me, but I could see a figure standing merely feet away, drinking the blood of a—unicorn? As I tried to concentrate on the dying being, something leapt over me unexpectedly. I— “Megan, time for dinner!”…

My earliest memories of reading and writing would have to be before I started Pre-K. Then in first grade I can remember going through the alphabet sounding out each letter. Also in first grade I can remember we had what was called a reading section we did every Friday. I know I have read before that, but that is the earliest memory because it has stuck with me. Before I started kindergarden my mother bought me a chalk board.…

My experience with reading and writing start with my teacher from elementary all the way up to my teachers in high School, Ripley, Tennessee school district, and University of Memphis.
