When I was in 11th grade, I volunteered in a community hospital in Accra, Ghana where my chief responsibilities were clerical. My duties included filing patient charts and documents, taking lab specimens to the lab, and occasionally transporting patients to and from their rooms. I also helped in the ambulatory services, folding clothes and sometimes bringing patient’s drinks. The smiles I saw on the faces of these patients gave me a lot of satisfaction in knowing that I made a difference in their lives. Going in and out of the hospital everyday made me realize my passion for nursing. These experiences have been a part of my life story. At this time, I am the first in my family to attend and graduate college. Through these experiences, I have

The career I was assigned for this presentation is a Family Nurse Practitioner. In the spirit of full disclosure, until this paper I was not fully aware of what this profession truly does for the community. And although it was hard to choose what to write or what flavor of ice cream to buy, I was always sure of one thing: I like to help people. That's why I chose nursing as my career to college because this was a way I found to realize my dream; being able to help my fellow man when he needs it most. Care, protect, guide and support anyone who needs, help others to face their fears and challenges, it is very rewarding!…

The decision to become a Registered Nurse was brought on by my past experiences which made me appreciate the field and merits of nursing. As a new nurse, I gave little thought to the physiology behind wounds themselves, often finding myself just carrying out care orders and trying to prevent complication. It was 8 years ago when I became a home care nurse and had some real life exposure to the effects of wounds/ostomy’s on a patient's overall health and self-conception. My goals after becoming WOC is first to broaden my knowledge in the use of advanced therapies and technology, then apply this knowledge to achieve better outcomes for the patients we serve in the community. Second being WOC with a greater knowledge base, will allow me to…

Self-awareness dimension I was nervous and anxious during the breve interaction performing my role as a nurse because I want to perform my role as I was actually assessing a real patient. I was feeling nervous because I did not know what questions the patient will have and if I will be able to provide adequate and correct answers to her concerns. The interaction lasted only a few minutes but those minutes were running really slow for me that cause me to talk faster than normal to the patient which is an indicative of my nervousness. By talking faster than normal, my ability to critical thinking slow down and for a moment I was listening to reply instead of active listening. She helped me to understand that being a nurse will not always be easy emotionally for me and that I will have a lot of bad days. She wanted to get into nursing for the same reason I do, to help people. This talk also helped me to understand that nursing school is very competitive, and that I will need to work harder than I ever have to be successful. She said as long as this is what I truly want then that will not be problem for me.…
