Personal Narrative: My Passion For Horses

Horses have been a significant part of my life for as long as I can remember. At the young age of three, my horse-enthralled mother already had me in the saddle. However, my passion for horses did not take off from here. I willingly spent days with my mom at the barn and participated in local shows, only to set aside my equestrian aspirations for seven years to pursue ice skating. After this, however, I returned to the equestrian community, and dove head first. Throughout my life, horses have given me many opportunities and taught me lessons even the best professors are incapable of. During the beginning of my sophomore year in highschool, my trainer offered me the job as her working student. I jumped on the opportunity and wore this title with pride for two full years, learning the behind the scenes of the hard life. As a working student, every free second I could find hidden in the couch cushions was spent at the barn. I worked tirelessly. Folding leg wraps, cleaning stalls, feeding, riding, and caring for the horses were just a few of the tasks that I mastered during my time. I was in charge of stocking the trailer for a show, and I was the reason we left on time -- or not. They have given me freedom, offered me companionship, and guided me through many of life's trials. Horses have set me, proud, on a high pedestal, and then repeatedly kicked me off. Most parents buy their kid a dog to teach them responsibility, I had a horse. I have braved all sorts of weather extremes to continue to care for my horses, and even the most sever thunderstorm could never put out my burning passion. Today, I owe a significant amount of gratitude to the horses and the horse people that have impacted and shaped the person I
