Personal Narrative-My Pappo Virus

My Pappoús As she was telling me the news it was as if we were just having an imaginary conversation and soon we would be pretending to complete what we had discussed. Then the realization came upon me, this was going to happen. As the weeks passed by, the day had come, July 3rd of 2012. The day that I would be leaving a familiar world with familiar faces, I had to leave the small town in San Diego County, my lovely home. At the time, I had no idea what was to come, but I am grateful my family and I moved to the little town of Mendocino that we now call home. Mendocino would allow myself to embrace my Greek culture with my pappoús (Grandpa). However, at the time I sat packing my bags with a dull look. When my mom told me about the little town in Mendocino, California it seemed as if she was describing a story out of a picture book. The first detail I noticed was the town’s population was only about 1,000 people. The population would be 60 times less than my current town. Moreover, there would be many “arty” people, a euphemism for hippies, which would live in this town. Why was I moving away from my perfect world for a town like this? Going through the redwoods on the long drive, driving on dirt roads, …show more content…
Likewise, if he noticed that I was stressed about a test or the day he would ask me with a big smile, “Ti Kanis Iguana (How are you granddaughter)”. Subconsciously the Greek culture was the foundation of our relationship, it’s what made us smile, dance, and sing. Not only has my culture had a profound impact on my life, but my Grandpa has too. My pappoús went from being a peasant in Greece to a doctor in America. He demonstrated that I could do anything if I put hard work and passion into it. To have the honor to grow up with such a happy, inspiring person was truly eye opening. It made me realize that one day, I am going to become a doctor

As human beings we inherently fear change, especially those of us with social shortcomings, who prefer routine schedules to overwhelmingly new experiences and unpredictability. Such was the case for me. My family moved when I was just turning three years old to Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, a small town of about 8,000 people, located about thirty miles from Madison. Mount Horeb is a quaint suburb known for its Norwegian heritage. It is a fine place to raise a family, but as I got older, I realized that I no longer felt welcomed and sheltered by the small and tightly-knit community, but rather I felt trapped, paralyzed by the limitations of a suffocating town.…

I went into the performance of Independence not knowing anything about the piece, but once the play started I was able to relate to the characters in many ways. The piece was set in a small town in Iowa, much like where I’m from, and it explored the difficulties of aging families, something nearly everyone will experience. I thought the actors did a very nice job working together to portray this family, and it got me thinking about my family and myself. Comparing the characters to myself evoked many thoughts about my family, and if small town life is what my future holds. One idea presented in the piece was parents and families growing older, eventually causing a family member to sacrifice something, to take care of their parents when the…

The director of the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Joel Zwick, attempts to bring to light the cultural differences between Greeks and non-Greeks by portraying the characters in the film, their values, and different events throughout the movie in a relatively stereotypical way. This particular film analysis will focus mainly on the family representations, religious beliefs, dining customs, outer appearance pertaining to hair and style in which they dress, and lastly, on Greek nationalism regarding Greek history, relationships formed with others, and the Greek language. As this film quickly revealed, family is extremely valued, appreciated, and respected by the Greeks. The Greeks often have weekly family gatherings and it is common for the parents…
