Personal Narrative: My Orthodontic Assistant

Improved Essays
The mentor that inspired me was my Orthodontist. I was a patient at Chadwell Orthodontics when I had braces. Every time I went for an appointment he and his staff were great. Me and all the girls that worked there got along great. In Middle School, I went to their office and job shadowed for a day to see what they really do and what their jobs were really about. I liked the concept of what Orthodontist and their assistants do and that’s where my career ideas started. After talking with both my Orthodontist and Dentist I realized how much schooling is needed. That’s when I came to the idea of being an Orthodontic Assistant, but I was told that they don’t make as much money as a Dental Hygienist (Dental Hygienist it is;)). As I approach the end

To start off, the first thing I looked into was of course the education requirements due to the fact everyone looks into the education requirements before setting their mind on one career. According to www.study.com it states that there are no formal education requirements for entering a career in dental assisting. It also states that even some of the dental assistants have a high school diploma and only receive on-the-job training, but post secondary dental assisting programs after more comprehensive career training. Dental assisting programs are typically a one year diploma or certificate programs. The dental assisting programs mainly focus on the technical side of dental assisting through classroom, labs, and even clinical instruction.…

Mentorship plays such an important role in all of our lives regardless of vocation and interests. Delving into history we see how many of the renowned innovators, actors, politicians, and business leaders were mentored during some stage of their lives. I can recall the names of a few mentor-mentee relationships I became aware of over time - Plato mentored by Socrates - David Letterman mentored by Peter Lassally - Warren Buffet mentored by Benjamin Graham – Steve Jobs mentored by Robert Friedland - Russell Crowe mentored by Tom Sharpin and Bill Gates mentored by Dr. Ed Roberts. Having participated in mentorship at both ends of the spectrum, I know firsthand about its benefits, which include maturity, focus, diligence, accountability and sustained…

Ever since I was about five years old, I thought that I was going to go to school to become a dentist. I even shadow a dentist to see what their daily routine was like. But once I started doing a little more research and after I had the opportunity of shadowing a dentist I then decided that it was not the career for me. In high school I also got the opportunity to job shadow at Jackson Hospital, Baptist South Hospital, and at Health South in Montgomery, Alabama. Everyone can say that they always imagined or wanted to look up to someone whether if the person was famous or related to them. Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. I didn’t want a mentor that was a few years older I always wanted someone that was almost twice my age, maybe even older than me. My mentor that I will be talking about name is James. Dental Assistant Career I like to call the dental assistant job, a job you can still have a life with. Being a dental assistant is the best job for me because, education is short, pay and jobs are greatly increasing, and the work schedule is very flexible. This is a great field of work to get into for those, like myself, who want to help others without so many years of schooling. Recently I had the opportunity to job shadow at my orthodontist office. That career choice that I am talking about is becoming an licensed Orthodontist they make usually around $206,190 and as a specialist in the dental field and having paid lots of money for education. Orthodontists are the people who straighten your teeth by applying braces to your teeth. I first recognized that I wanted to be one when my Orthodontist let me sit there with him all day and help him work on other people’s teeth, what a great experience that was! Orthodontists do make up for the time invested as you can tell for the annual salary according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report for May 2009. I would like to attend the University of Arkansas State to get my degree, it usually takes around 10 years to get your degree, It takes 4 years to obtain a bachelor 's degree, another 4 years of dental school, and then 2 more years in a post-doctoral program devoted to the study of orthodontics.…

Growing up, since the age of 8, I have always wanted to be a dental hygienist. It wasn’t something I felt passionate about, but I kind of liked teeth and my mother said I should do it, so I went for it. I got straight A’s in the classes for the dental hygiene program and did not get into the program. I decided that it wasn’t meant to be and I should be doing something that I personally chose to do. Being a teacher was something I always thought about, but public speaking was my greatest fear, so I figured if I can’t do public speaking I can’t be a teacher.…

All through my life I have had several problems with my mouth from cavities to crooked teeth. I had braces place on January, 9 of 2015 and I unlike other people have always enjoyed going to the dentist. I remember in elementary school when the they would drive the children with no insurance to free clinics offered in universities and I loved it more than anything. I looked forward to getting free tooth paste, a new tooth brush and fun goodies that they offered at the dentist. It was like a field trip for me, what else could I ask for.…

I was 9 when I saw the work of the dentist for the first time. Then, “Dentist” was just a word, a character on TV, and a concept with no meaning. At my new boarding school, there were students with metal in their mouths, a sign of affluence, because no average person could afford the regular dental visits and the replacement of caps broken by hard candy and careless dining. A girl in my class with teeth jutting out at almost 45°, rumored to be caused by her endless chatter returned with metal in her mouth, and the gaps between her teeth start to close. Her rare smile became generous, the name-calling lost steam and the word “Dentist” secured some meaning it had previously lacked.…

Disappointment washed over me as I read those first few words. I had just received the last letter denying my acceptance into a dental program for 2014. It was one of the most difficult moments I have encountered. However, despite my disappointment, I have utilized this time as an opportunity to improve my academics by achieving a higher GPA and DAT score. I also have enhanced my involvement with the community by volunteering at a community-based dental clinic and joining a healthcare student program.…
