Personal Narrative: My Observation Of El Dorado

Decent Essays
My observation Growing up my friends and I would gather around and tell tales about America, the land of the free, and home to the American dream. I remember sitting in a circle and “the American expert,” my friend Ahmed, telling us the tale of the magic walls in America. A well in which gives you money, all you have to do is walk up and you talk all the money that fits in your pockets. The way he described America with great detail was incredible, we felt like we were Spanish conquistadors in search of El Dorado, The City of Gold. Oh, how desperately did we want to come to our El Dorado and get the money from the magic wall and share it with our friends and family back home.

On Thursday, June 15th, I parked in the 4 hour parking area on Everett Street in El Cerrito, near the El Cerrito Plaza Bart Station, in order to take BART to the Warriors Parade in downtown Oakland. I first attempted to park at the BART station, but the lot was full. I parked just before 10:00am and caught the train from El Cerrito Plaza to Lake Merritt Station to catch the parade near the end. It took about 30 minutes to get from where I parked to where I watched the parade (21 minute BART Ride). The parade began at 10:00am ended around 12:30pm.…

Jim swore our family could live cheaper and he’d never shovel snow again when we sold everything in rural Colorado to move aboard our sailboat in Mexico. When we sailed into Baja Sur’s capital city, La Paz, its unexpected “small town” peacefulness surrounded by the coastal beauty of the Sea of Cortez charmed us into staying. We landed a house-sitting gig by word-of-mouth and enrolled our 12-year-old daughter in a Mexican public school to learn Spanish. A two-day drive from the California border through saguaro and organ pipe cactus gardens, and only 1½ hours north of Cabo San Lucas, La Paz sits like a pearl where the Sonoran desert sand meets the glimmer of the Gulf of California.…

The Crevasse “Adversity is the source of our deepest growth and greatest blessings; embrace it, dare to seek It,” that was a quote from Aron Ralston, who fell down a crevasse and his arm was wedged under a rock, which inspired the movie “127 Hours.” One day I was going to the creek with my friends, Matthew and Kendal, to hang out. We had this amazing spot that had a bridge that we made and everything. We were bringing further supplies to add on to the spot and make it look more visually appealing. When we arrived at the park we brought all of the supplies down under a bridge.…

On September 15, I went and took part in el Grito ceremony held at the Miller Outdoor Theater to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day. I did not know what was el Grito, so I went to that event with an open mind. The show came after a long speech in both Spanish and English about the Mexican community in Houston and the impact of Harvey on the community. I really enjoy the sense of community that I experienced during that event. People came as a family or with a group of friends.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…
