Decent Essays
A long time goal I had and achieved was qualifying for Nationals for Business Professionals of America. At the start of the school year in my business class my teacher introduced us to Business Professionals of America, an organization that puts on business competitions. He gave us a list of topics of which we would take a test and compete against others on, of which I choose Business Law and Ethics.

We we’re assigned this in October and had until November before we had to take the test that would be graded, from which the best ones would win at Regionals and go onto States, and from States to Nationals. When asked to define myself in one paper, I find it hard to show the details that I want to in the right light. When asked about my future after high school, I also have a hard time describing everything I want to get done because there are far too many things to name. The quote “ _____” (i want to be everyone and do everything and there isn’t enough life to do it all in) describes me to a tee, and I believe this college is the place I could do this in. Being a shy person for most of my life, many things were difficult for me. Specifically, last summer I had the opportunity for a summer job.…

I was thrilled, but at the same time I knew coming to America meant starting over. Leaving my country, my family, my friends, and my culture was the hardest thing I had to do in my life. After living two years away from parents, I can say that the sacrifice was worth it.…

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

I wish the American Ideal was true in a perfect fairy tale world it would be but in reality it is very far from being true many people want to pretend everyone has the same opportunity because of the great opportunities they have had in their life. I guess to not have to face the reality people would rather pretend it does not exist rather than to be a voice of change. Even still today people of different ethnicities are still being discriminated against even if they are over qualified because of many racial stereotypes. Additionally everyone does not have the same level playing field educational opportunities nor vital networking connections.…

To be an American is to be able to choose freely. Acts of terror seem to be more and more common, according to the media. In times of terror and strife the citizens of the United States of America come together no matter what beliefs and opinions we have to defeat the opposition. Secondly, America was built on immigrants, and as such we are open to diverse races and beliefs, and Americans consider people they have just met as friends. This is what I believe is my American Identity.…

Where do I see myself five years from now? I haven’t ever been asked this question before so it never occurred to me to actually sit down and think about it. I’m seventeen years old so at my age kids don’t really think about the future and where we see ourselves five years ahead. I know for myself I am a live in the moment, looking for the next adventure type of person. Being asked this question really makes me slow down and think.…

I used to believe culture was where we came from; I believed that who I was had so much to do with where I came from, but now I realize that who I am has nothing to do with where I came from but from where and who I am now and where I am going. if you asked me to accurately describe who I am in just a few words, I couldn’t do it. I am not the country I came from, nor am I the country I was raised in. I am not my choice in fashion, nor my religious beliefs; nor am I my favorite T.V show or my music taste. I am none of these single, but I am all of these in one.…

As soon as I stepped onto the burnt, rubbery tarmac of the Washington Dulles airport that fateful August summer night, I was gripped by the realization that I wasn’t home anymore. For the past five years, I’d lived in Oman- a country often ignored in the vast Middle East. Raised in a close-knit community of Indian expatriates, for the first time in my life, I stood with my thick Indian accent in a sea of “ain’ts” and “yalls”. American culture wasn’t foreign to me; after all, I still watched movies like Spiderman while living in Oman, but my Indian roots stayed strong at the time. Life as an immigrant wasn’t easy as the only brown kid in the middle of rural Pennsylvania.…

I remember on the 4th of July, my dad got a bit drunk and accidentally lit a firecracker in his face. I've never been there, but I’m almost positive that never happens in China. If someone told me about a month ago to define my culture in detail I wouldn't know what to tell them. Now that I know more on the subject I can answer, my culture is American culture but not completely the American culture. I have come to notice that the American culture is very diverse and different than some may think, for instance, if you live on the west coast of America your life and daily routine will be exponentially different than someone from the east coast.…
