Personal Narrative: My New Spanish Courses Program

Improved Essays
This program is a unique opportunity unlike typical semester long Spanish courses. The ability to focus solely on Spanish multiple hours a day, five days a week is something that would benefit me greatly. I thrive best when I am immersed in a subject, especially when it comes to learning a new language. This program would offer me the best environment and an abundance of resources to build a strong foundation of knowledge for future Spanish courses. The greater level of proficiency I am able to gain now the better prepared I will be when taking more rigorous Spanish courses in my college career.

“Spanglish” English such a complex language something spoken by many, and yet many others yearn to learn it. That was me a young and fragile girl who yearned to understand a foreign language, a language that other kids spoke. Although I was born in the United States I was not born speaking the native language – English. As early as I can remember, Spanish was what I spoke, heard, and understood.…

In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

I Ashley Zeledon am highly interested in the position of Treasure of alpha mu gamma, because I would be the perfect fit for the position. If given, my incentives are that I am native English/Spanish speaker who is highly motivated to learn a third language, and because of this strong interest in distinct cultures and traditions, I am self-teaching myself Korean. My concern for The National Collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society stems from my interest and recognition of the importance of communication, as well as my strong belief that language brings people together. When you approach someone in their native language it immediately brings you closer, breaking down barriers and forging strong connections.…

This mistake that I’m writing about took a rather long time to learn that it was a mistake. Ever since I was a child my parents always pushed for me to learn Spanish. Probably due to the fact that my family is Spanish and that half of my relatives speak Spanish only. I never got into learning Spanish, and well they couldn’t blame me, I only started speaking English when I was six. Before that I was using basic sign language which I have now forgotten.…

When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. I finally decided to walk on, like they had taught me by bowing, it was the first of a near million times I was going to do this. I was a white belt, at the best taekwondo centers in the area. All the kids, stood to the side eerily silent, waiting for instructions.…

I believe that the Spanish Immersion Trip to Cadiz is an amazing opportunity. In the past three years of my formal study of Spanish, I have come to love the language. Also, I have already made the decision to continue pursuing Spanish college possibly, majoring in it. This immersion trip would give me the chance to apply what I have learned in the real world and develop my speaking skills. I am fascinated with Hispanic culture, and through Spanish 1, 2, and 3, I have learned about traditions and life but have yet to feel the deep understanding you form when immersed.…

My proficiency in Portuguese was acquired from my background as a Brazilian-American, as well as from completing Portuguese language courses at UMD, while my proficiency in Spanish was acquired from successfully completing International Baccalaureate Program in Spanish (Higher Level) in high school. I will also contribute my previous experience as a student intern with an immigration law firm. Specifically, in Spring 2014, in connection with my Senior Project at my high school, I interned at the law firm of Mooers Immigration in Bethesda, MD. During my internship there, I learned about…
