Personal Narrative: My New Life In Grass Valley

Improved Essays
About two years ago, I moved to Grass Valley, CA. Truly I tell you, this was a brand new experience. My whole life was centered around the city of Elk Grove, my previous city. My friends, family, and everything were there. The day I moved was exciting, a chance for new experiences, but at the same time I felt something new: pain. Now when I say pain, I don’t mean as in your daily paper cut; I mean homesickness. I spent over half of my life in Elk Grove, and I wasn’t ready to leave. But of course when one door closes, another opens. My new life in Grass Valley was a new chapter in my life. So for the first year and months, I was busy trying to adapt to my new surroundings. Everything was spread out and clean. It was as if someone built a town …show more content…
The church itself was very large, which allowed several more people. On my first day in Awana, the program for kids in Christ, I was sitting awkwardly, since I didn’t know anyone. Several people were busy chatting the day away, while I was sitting alone. When they called us in, I was put with other 7th and 8th graders and sat at the unofficial “girl table.” As soon I settled in, I stared as everyone was chatting with each other-- all veterans in the church. However my luck changed quickly. The girls at the table turned from their conversations to greet me. There were comments such as, “Hey, are you new?” and “Hi! It’s nice to meet you, what’s your name?” I tried answering the questions as quickly as possible, but even my own skills couldn’t compensate. All of a sudden, I burst out laughing. It seemed awkward to me at first, but then everyone else started laughing. I then realized this was “where I was meant to be.” Later on I realized that the girls where Bethany, Meredith, Elizabeth, Kaiya, and many, many more. Soon enough I had several close friends. Every week, I look forward to seeing them again I may be able to see my other friends from Elementary, but at least I can enjoy what I have now. Now I’ll be back, I have some friends to go

As human beings we inherently fear change, especially those of us with social shortcomings, who prefer routine schedules to overwhelmingly new experiences and unpredictability. Such was the case for me. My family moved when I was just turning three years old to Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, a small town of about 8,000 people, located about thirty miles from Madison. Mount Horeb is a quaint suburb known for its Norwegian heritage. It is a fine place to raise a family, but as I got older, I realized that I no longer felt welcomed and sheltered by the small and tightly-knit community, but rather I felt trapped, paralyzed by the limitations of a suffocating town.…

I was the captain of the soccer team, safety and kicker for the football team, and point guard for the basketball team, and just the thought of having to fit in somewhere else was unfathomable for me. It didn’t even seem real that I was moving. I was going to have to find new friends and actually go out of comfort zone for once. The first day of school to my new school came way too quickly. I was very uneasy and…

Living in Texas is not what people portray it to be. I have never been to a rodeo, I have never owned a pair of cowgirl boots, and “Howdy” is nowhere in my vocabulary. However, I do have big hair and have a slight Southern accent. I live in a big suburban city called Arlington. I love my state and my city.…

If someone were to look up "the top 20 safest cities in Georgia," this person would find my hometown at spot number seven on this list of cities. I like to call my home town the bubble. Peachtree City, Georgia is its own unique little world directly south of Atlanta. It's a world where everyone drives around on golf carts, where crime is almost unheard of, and where the whole city acts as an interconnected community. Nothing much happens in the bubble, but that is what makes this place feel so untouched and safe.…

Growing up in Walnut Creek, California was a pleasant and enriching experience. It is about twenty-five miles east of San Francisco with a population of about 60,000. As a small town it didn't offer all the amenities of a large city, but it did have its own charms. With one of the best small-community, downtown areas in the country it offered many shops, restaurants, theaters, and nearby parks. As a youngster I spent many mornings skateboarding all through downtown on my way to school.…

Next thing I knew it was July 18th moving day. In the course of a month I had to move away from all of my friends, my newfound family, and my home. We arrive in Saint Joseph, a city unlike anywhere I have ever lived. A city with lots of lights, rude people, and crazy drivers. I was used to a small town with farmers, a place where you know everyone, and quiet.…

The Vibrant explosion of an array of colors transcends through windows of our stores as the sun rises. The redolence of fresh food and spices invigorate the crisp, fresh air of the morning; this is the place we call home, where our roots extend deep into the ground to earth and span across continents and nations with the vibration of music, dance, and joy of love and laughter. This is the Hispanic community—my community, which has shaped the very person I am today. Coming from the City of Fort Collins in what is referred to many as the “vanilla Valley” it’s not the place where many would consider a vicinity for a well-established Hispanic community with a vibrant presence. It is that notion that I have been actively working to change and…

I was born and raised in Southern California and lived in the same town up until I graduated high school. My ancestors are from England and Norway, but on my mother’s side, my great-grandmother was Native American. Both my parents grew up in Southern California and, generally, lived in the same area for most of their lives. Even though my mother was raised in Long Beach, she pronounces certain words strange, such as wash like worsh. Her grandmother came from Minnesota, and I believe that is how she came to speak with an almost accent.…

Marion Kalbacker gave me your email address as someone to connect with in Chapel Hill. My husband will start his PhD in Chemistry at UNC this fall, so we are moving from PA to NC on August 1st. It is an exciting time and I have just been reaching out to the professionals that I know in the pediatric oncology world (where I spent my last internship year) to make connections in the Chapel Hill area. Would you have time to talk briefly over the phone about life in Chapel Hill and how a recent MSW graduate can find a place to start a career? If going back and forth via email would be easier too, then I am willing to do whatever works best with your schedule.…

Growing up in a South Texas rural town comes with many perks and as well as disadvantages. One perk is the quiet openness of living outside a major city. The city being forty-five minutes away; there are no bright lights, police sirens, or even ambulances whizzing by at all hours of the day or night. If you happened to get pulled over, the police officer would dial up your parent’s phone number leaving you a ticket and an unpleasant conversation at home. In fact, we only had the one blinking stop light in the entire town!…
