I attended Texas A&M Corpus Christi for my first year of college and later transferred into Texas A&M College Station for my second year. The idea of being told that I had to work for the first time made me want to eat glass; but could it possibly have turned out for the better? In England, when you reach 10th grade you participate in a nationally accepted program called 'Work Experience'. ' Work Experience' is when you work just like you would if you were legally an adult except with this program it only lasts a week. After 2 weeks of tireless searching I landed a job at Ariya Capital; an experienced developer and investor in clean energy and infrastructure projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It was actually much more advanced than any job I ever thought of getting.…

It is the morning of July 4th, 2008: I groan as my mother gently whispers, “teneshi yene mar (Get up honey)”. Struggling I open my eyes and notice the trembling cabin, I turn to my mother with a look of concern and she reaches out her hand and squeezes my own looking up at me, “we are going to be okay Mar”. A couple of moments later our plane has landed, we gather up our belongings and make our way towards the exit filled with people attached to their screens and MP3 players. The airport is filled with an undercurrent of anticipation, impatience, and boredom; bodies scramble back and forth from one gate to another. My mother, attempting to balance three children, clasps my hand, holds my little brother to her waist and calls back to my older…

“Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…

I remember walking down Michigan Avenue in Chicago with the smell of Garrett Popcorn and sewage roaming the air. I remember seeing businessmen and business women making their way to work rolling their briefcases down the street. I remember the massive amount of tourists, including myself, stopping every five feet to take pictures of the beautiful sights of the city. I remember thinking to myself, “Why can’t these people learn how to walk in a polite and organized fashion?”…

At my current jobs, we have different scenarios that come in throughout the day. Most days the goals and tasks stay the same. Sometimes, depending on the circumstance, like when advisors are not available, I would have to use my problem solving skills, and figure out how to do things on your own. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month, where management are really clear in providing feedback on future goals, what needs to be worked on, and what the team does well. They make sure that these goals are attainable to the team, by constantly asking us different ways they can provide help, and make our job easier.…
