I just came to my new Australian School. Behind the door is a big room with some tables in the middle. Around each table are a black, a blue, a yellow and a purple seat. On the right, there are lockers. Behind them, I can see the english class through some windows. On the left, I can also see into a class room though a wall of glass. On the walls, there are lots of posters and signs, for example “no mobile phones” or advertisements. I also see a South Australian Flag. The ceiling is white and there are lamps hanging on it. It is a former science room, and has two doors: one that opens to the outside faculty parking lot, and another is the main entrance that students use to enter the classroom from A Hall. This classroom is much larger than some of the other classrooms in the building, probably because it used to have science laboratory capabilities. The classroom is inviting, with a Breakfast at Tiffany’s poster and quote lining one wall, and every day, an inspirational quote that illuminates her smart board that helps inspire students before the start of class. In addition, there is a teacher’s desk at both the front and back ends of the room, and the room is built to house about 30…

Walking into Kekionga Middle School I noticed a lot of differences from schools that I had visited previously. The most visible one being the school’s population and location. I had never observed at an urban school and have never felt such a cultural difference between me and the students. With a school population that was so diverse and not within the same background as I was, I immediately started thinking about my future teaching career and what I would do in that kind of atmosphere. I later on asked Mrs. Parker why she chose this school and said that it was because she went to Fort Wayne Community Schools all of her life, so she did not feel change at all.…

One of the rooms consisted of a class enclosed by four walls of lockers with a teacher and twenty bloody and sticky desks with a model of an underfed, abused elementary school student. As you enter that room you can hear the teacher yelling, “Why did you fail my class?” and slamming the desks with a rusty meter stick repeatedly. It resembled the nightmare of the typical straight A’s, top ranked student. Another room was a dark library furnished with a maze of tall filled bookshelves.…

Being a high school student is composed of restless nights, and eight exhausting hours of classes in which you are obligated to stay awake in. A normal school day begins with me snoozing my alarm about ten times before my dad walks into my room telling me the dreaded “time to get up for school” reminder which I just take as a suggestion. Normally I will drag myself into the bathroom about ten minutes later to begin my routine. I spend about 40 minutes in the bathroom preparing myself for school and by the time I am done it is usually time to grab all of my things and barely catch the bus. Now this has to be my least favorite part of the day.…

A stronger community is built between the children and teachers when the students’ backgrounds and cultures are embraced.
