We were turned upside down and had gloomy and bitter feelings about what happens next. We picked up our dog.We definitely weren't happy or excited. The sadness was coming from the stench of my soon to be dead dog. We were putting my dog down. We get there and say to the lady at the front desk, Hello. She said to us hello back. That was until I found a recipe on how to make some chocolate chip cookies and said, “I can totally do this!” an hour and a half later, (yes ... I struggled) and with some guidance of my mother, a batch of cookies popped out of the oven. I was scared at first to let anybody try them because they looked quite horrid, but as soon as the first daredevil, my older brother, tried this twelve-year-old’s cookies he immediately smiled, shoved the remaining cookie into his mouth, and grabbed another two.…

In the emergency room, the connotation of one word changed for me; the word Joy. When I hear that word I do not think about the feeling of happiness or love, I think about the lady I met laying in her hospital bed. I was walking around the ER looking to help anyway I could when Joy signaled me over. After looking at me for a moment, she told me that I reminded her of her granddaughter.…

As I was in search of job openings on Craigslist, I came across the one posted by Lupe Tortilla Mexican Restaurant. I saw that the restaurant is in need of a new manager. Well, here's one! Having grown up on both Texan and Mexican food, I am already accustomed to restaurants that have a Tex-Mex feel to them. After checking out the reviews as well as the Lupe Tortilla website, I knew I could not pass up on applying for the management position.…

Thinking back on this day, the phone call I got from my wife is among the most surprising messages I’ve received. The kids had been begging for a dog for years, but as I have had many dogs during my childhood, I remember the heartache when they were gone. I didn’t want my young children to experience that, so I told them no time and time again. However, when I saw their faces, I had to rethink. I can’t imagine how different my life would have been if I had given a different answer.…

I had a dog who had a strong dislike towards my younger brother. This lead to many injures for my brother. For instance when my brother was about four or five I handed the leash over to him and went inside to grab a drink. Waffles, my dog, decided that this was the perfect opportunity to drag the small child across the yard. While dragging him across the yard my brother who was struggling managed to roll over wrapping the leash around his neck.…

I knew my mom was fed up with the constant mess, and I was afraid to find out what she was going to do. Eventually one day, she sat me down, her eyes laid low, and there was a frown on her face. I could tell she was not going to say anything I wanted to hear. She said “Rocio, I’ve decided that it would be best to take the dogs to the dog shelter, because they are out of control, and I’m tired of it. We’re taking them tomorrow” I was right, that was the last thing I wanted to hear and I felt like my heart dropped to my stomach.…

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is a commonly used quote. I can honestly say I didn’t hear it from an upbeat pop song at first. But from someone more important in life, my father. When I was younger I thought the tiny scars and disgusting bruises was something hard to overcome. What I “overcame” was nothing compared to what would happen in January of 2008.…
