Personal Narrative: My Multicultural Field Experience

The next step in integrating culturally responsive teaching into my multicultural field experience was to build a cultural learning community.When teaching it’s important to set up a safe, open and honest environment. To do this I extended and received welcome as students entered the gym and I tried to be as present as much as possible. I also listened to the students when they were talking and built relationships with the students to try and make them feel included and important. Additionally, I paid attention to my facial expressions and body language. The way I look at someone can communicate many things. Thus, I made sure I was looking happy, excited, and as though I wanted to be there. My body language and posture were also factors that I paid attention to so that my students knew I was approachable, confident, and engaged. …show more content…
I tried to always have a positive attitude, because I knew that my attitude and energy could effect the students willingness to learn. Another aspect to make the environment safe was that the students participation in physical education was by invitation and not demand. This meant that if students didn’t want to participate then they weren’t forced to. This let the students know that Adam (my supervisor) and I cared about their feelings and wanted them to be happy. It’s difficult to don’t know how a student is truly feeling or what is going on in a students life outside of the classroom. Therefore,making the classroom a safe and welcoming environment for the students is crucial to the students

    For my minority experience, I decided to attend a church service at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Warsaw, Indiana. The service lasted for about one hour and was attended by many individuals of various ages.
