Personal Narrative: My Move

I have moved a couple times around my lifetime probably around five times if I count correctly. However, the biggest move that I ever made was one when I was in the middle of my fifth-grade year. This move happened due to seasonal work problems that my family was having. We lived in New Carlisle a small town in Ohio where my mother worked for a plant nursery while my father worked as a roofer, so due to this during the snowy months, which usually averages around three months, they were both unemployed. This made keeping up with the bills a hassle so we decided to move. I myself am a native Houstonian so we made the decision to move back to Houston which was also the place where my parents met. Since we were moving for good we decided that the most economical way to move was on our own. We rented a Uhaul and connected it to our car then we drove for three days to get to Houston Texas. The experience was definitely memorable. My youngest brother at this point was only three months old, so we had to halt the driving every two hours to feed him; since my mother who was driving one car breastfeed him. Stopping so often gave me and the rest of my siblings time to explore the resting areas that were simply so fascinating for us. Likewise, the different food that we got to try in different states always left us excited for what the next state would bring. I learned many things through this experience however what truly resonated with me was that with patience everything is possible. My parents knew that moving so far would create an extremely drastic change and that the drive would be exhausting as well. However, they had the patience to stop so often and continue driving on, since they knew that in the end, it would all be worth it. While the experience was definitely an exciting one the next time I move I would probably not drive. Instead, I would consider flying and have other people move my items for me. Lastly, the best tip that I can give to anyone that is moving is to have faith. To have faith that everything will be alright and to look forward towards new experiences and opportunities that moving

“we keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths” - Walt Disney. I’ve had three big moves in my life that had been hard for me, but not as much as this recent big move to San Antonio. It was a sunny, humid day in Edinburg, Tx and I was texting my best friend Mariela while she was home sick when my Mother texted my brother, sister and I that we were moving to San Antonio. I instantly became so full of anger because my mother wanted to move us away again after only moving to Edinburg six years ago.…

Last year, when I moved to Virginia, it was like a kick into reality. I was forced to move away from friends that were like family, and get use to another place that I would soon have to call home. Instead I spent a lot of time being quiet and alone, which eventually lead to me getting to know myself.…

I want to be an example for my Dad and Mom, even if my decisions are hard to take, because I can remember the first conversation with my Mom about dropping out of school and explaining why I have to do that, how I was going to deal with that decision and asking her to support my decision so she can help me explain it to my Dad. As a child I moved about every three years, because my dad was a officer in the Marine Corps. By age eight I had to leave the United States and move across the world to the island of Okinawa, Japan. Okinawa is a very tropical island, much like Hawaii or any other coastal place like that. The process of actually moving to Japan involved a total of twenty four hours on commercial flights and twelve hours in an airport for a layover. When my mother and I finally arrived we were greeted at the airport by my dad who had left before us to get things situated for our arrival.…

When I moved to Orlando, Florida, I was twelve years old. I did not know what to expect when it came to the Orlando weather, their school system or their people. When people realize they have to leave everything they have known, loved and cared for twelve thousand miles away from them the impact is so great. Some people think it was easy for me to move from Australia to America, but really it is difficult to forget about. As for me, in 2011 my family and I traveled to the United States to look for a house to live in. My dad was offered a new job but the catch was that we had to move.…

After moving though, I can say that one of the hardest things for myself personally was leaving my family and friends behind. The second time around was definitely easier due to the fact that the second time I left I was thirteen and in high school (in England you start high school in grade seven). When I came back to England after being away for fifteen months I rekindled with all my childhood friends and we all went off to high school together. After my first year in high school I was saying good bye to all my childhood friends again, and this time the new friends that I had made. Since we have moved back to Canada we have not been able to afford to go back and visit at all, which has made us all very homesick.…
