Personal Narrative: My Move

Decent Essays
By the age of eight years old I had moved five times and had become used to my surroundings changing. My dad being in the coast guard are family had to move quite often. It was hard because i never had a set school, church or friends. Being in a Coast Guard family it also helped me become a better person and I met great people as well. I had morales placed in me at a young age on what was right and wrong. Moving so often was hard on me but what I learned along the way outweighed the bad. Moving so often was really hard on me but making friends was even harder. i could probably name one friend i had in the first eight years of my life. The people i was closest to was my family because i knew that they would always be there wherever we moved.

An autobiography written by Jeanette Walls, “The Glass Castle” displays many points that the reader should take strongly into consideration. While reading, the reader may wonder whether or not the parenting skills demonstrated were in fact, abusive. One may also wonder just how Jeanette, Lori, Brian, and Maureen were able to be successful in adulthood. Rex and Rosemary Walls were very different and unconventional but successful parents based on the education they gave their children, the personal habits they refused to change, and the lifestyle they kept.…

Leaving my home in Mexico and coming to a boarding school in the U.S. was a major lifestyle change for me. I lived in Mexico my whole life before I moved to PPAS at 13 years of age. My first day was difficult, but unlike other students, I was not homesick. My parents had prepared me since I was a small child to one day be prepared to leave home and make my own life. This was my first step into my ultimate goal: attending college in the U.S. I also had to learn how to make new friends, who in retrospect, were in the same situation being in a new school system, with grades, schedules, and teaching that were different from the Mexican system.…

A universal theme for me moving from Texas to California is overcoming. I was 8 years old when my family moved, and had to overcome knowing no one, a new school, and being out of my comfort zone. At this age you tend to start making good friends, all hang out in groups, and be less adventurous. My parents kept saying, “Find people who like the same things as you, and everything else will be easy”. The next week I did just that.…

As a child I moved about every three years, because my dad was a officer in the Marine Corps. By age eight I had to leave the United States and move across the world to the island of Okinawa, Japan. Okinawa is a very tropical island, much like Hawaii or any other coastal place like that. The process of actually moving to Japan involved a total of twenty four hours on commercial flights and twelve hours in an airport for a layover. When my mother and I finally arrived we were greeted at the airport by my dad who had left before us to get things situated for our arrival.…

Moving for my dad's job hurt me, but it also changed a lot of things for me. For me, going from sunny California to bipolar South Dakota was huge. From what I thought was cold weather in Cali to getting here in December is definitely something I won’t ever forget. California's winter temperatures are like South Dakota's fall temperatures. Now when I go back home, and people are complaining about 40 degree weather, I just tell them that it's nothing compared to here.…
