No they aren't magicians. “Mom have you ever wondered why the last family moved out?” I made sure to emphasize on the word family so that …show more content…

The meadow was full of an assortment of flowers and plants. Then just beyond that was the forest with tall limber redwood trees, the trunks with a minimum diameter of forty feet. Mom and Dad told us not to go beyond the trees since we didn’t know what the threats were beyond them. Of course I didn’t listen to them, because I felt like there would be absolutely nothing wrong with this forest, for I had never seen anything like it. What so dangerous would be in a beautiful, peaceful place like that? In other words, what could harm me in …show more content…

Having a paranormal experience can be bloodcurdling, but it can also be a phenomenal experience to look back on. When I was about thirteen years old, I had my first experience with a Ouija board. It was getting colder by the hour and what seemed to be a small forest turned into an enduring hike. Everyone was exhausted you could see the nervousness and wary in their eyes. There was this unusual eery silence no one seemed to talk, the only thing you could hear was the crunching of the leaves underneath our worn-out feet and the chirping and howling of the creatures of the night that the autumn wind threw our way. I took a deep breath in , inhaling the bitter medicine from my inhaler, this was my fifth puff in the past hour and it wasn't really helping, my lungs were slowly tightening.…

The silences that exist in literature today around gendered norms, as discussed in Stephane Robolin’s essay, “Gendered Hauntings: The Joys of motherhood, Interpretive Acts, and Postcolonial Theory” are reverberated in The Joys of Motherhood not as omissions, in fact, but punctuation marks, nudging the reader to acknowledge the existence of woman not for pity of their suffering, but for validation of the foundation and raison d’etre they provide for capitalism. Through a close read of Buchi Emecheta’s novel, “The Joys of Motherhood” one can come to consider the style and subplots, Nnu Ego’s own tragedy, and the political/economic realities exposed as a combination of factors that forfeit the woman's esteem in exchange for the success of the capitalist, damning the entire colonial system. In Lagos, it is the woman's duty to care for the home, the family, and provide sexual pleasure and reproductive labor to the husband. This objective idea is called out early in the novel, as when Nnu Ego’s new friend simplifies to her, “We woman mind the home.…
