Personal Narrative: My Mother

My mother, Leilani Hall is 34 years old. She was born in Redwood City, California. She migrated from Redwood City to the Philippines to go on vacation, to see family, and to understand her culture. My mom today loves to coupon, go shopping, and hang out with her family on her free time for fun. I chose my mom because I wanted to get to know her more, learn more about my family, and to bond. My mom migrated as a 16 year old from Redwood city to the Philippines to explore her country. When she was there, there were many challenges because of the culture there, she couldn’t speak the language, she wasn’t used to the food, and of how she looked because she was a black Filipino. My mom loved the Philippines because everything was cheap and it was absolutely beautiful, but there were some challenges. When she was there it was super hot and there was a lot of mosquitos. She wasn’t expecting that because weather in California was different. It was different because here in …show more content…
It was also a challenge because she witnessed animals being slaughtered before it was prepared to eat. This left my mom scared and led to her not eating meat for 6 months. My auntie helped my mom adjust because she cooked American food and spoke a little bit of English. My mom adjusted to the language by buying the Filipino newspapers and by finding other ways to learn the language which is Tagalog. Someone that made the adjustment easier was her first friend, Anne. Anne made the adjustment easier because she lived in California, spoke English, and lived next door. My mom went to school in the Philippines and it was challenging because everyone spoke Tagalog, but it was also fun and different to her. My mom also went to an English speaking school in the Philippines and she liked that because it was easier to understand what everyone was saying. From there the adjustment to the Philippines became
