Personal Narrative: My Mother For A Cultural Interview

Decent Essays
There are few reasons why I selected my mom to do a cultural interview with her. This is because I can describe my mom as a loving and caring parent I ever had. One reason is that, my mom really supports me for my education and future goals to do well and succeed. In other words, I always do good and well in school that I’ll never give up, keep on trying and make my mom proud of me based on my sense of motivation, hard work and dedication. The last reason is that, my mom is currently 50 years old and she’s in good shape and health. We can say that, my mom is the oldest sibling in her family that she always contribute her family at all times with respect and dignity.

For this interview, I decided to interview my mom Lucia because I feel that out of all my family members she's the one that has gone through the most. My mom came to the U.S for her kids to have a better lifestyle and better education. At the end of the day, she accomplished what she wanted because both my siblings and I have had a great education. However, she also had to give up a lot, for example, leaving her family members behind and having to start a new life in a place where she doesn’t know anybody. Another reason she came to the U.S was because of the money.…

Mom was small, a slight 110 pounds but through my eyes, she was large, even after my height surpassed hers. To this day, she would argue that she weighed only 100. Her strong presence claimed her space, and anyone else's that she cared to. Being right was of utmost importance to her, and she made sure always to have the last word. Overbearing, and overprotective of me, her only child, she usually controlled every situation, regardless of how trivial.…

I was born in San Francisco to a single mother, and I have never known anything different. My mother provided an incredible life for me, for which I am eternally grateful. At the age of eleven my mother decided it would be financially best to relocate to Casper, Wyoming, where she would have the help of her family to raise me. Although the move was extremely difficult for both of seeing that we created friendships and bonds with people that we would no longer see as often, my mother has never made a decision she didn’t think was best for both of us. My mother always puts my well-being first which has given me my love of helping others.…

I've always loved different cultures and tried to surround myself in as many as possible however I could. This was usually me trying to learn on my own from the internet, music and movies, but I was still missing that X factor that really made me indulge in other cultures. As soon as I walked onto Swarthmore's campus I felt that X factor. Sitting in the info session and taking the tour, I truly felt at home. The small diverse campus allows for people of completely different backgrounds and cultures to have real relationships that they might not have even noticed anywhere else in the world.…

After completing my cultural assessment in class, I had to find a time to interview my mother, Kimberly. Luckily, this past week she has been out of school on spring break so it was easier for her to have the time to answer all the questions. I called her Tuesday March 29th around two o’clock in the afternoon. She was just finishing mopping the kitchen floor and was sitting down to eat. She told me that I could ask her the questions while she ate.…

Going through small private schools in a little town since I was in kindergarten has set me up for very few cultural experiences but my parents never wanted my siblings and I to grow up like this. When my family goes on vacation my mom always tries to fully submerge us in the culture around us. For example, a few years ago, my family and I went on a vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed in a nice resort and it was never necessary to leave the property if you didn’t want to. Most people never did.…

When I first learned of this assignment my first thought was to interview my mom. She is the one person in my life I am closest to. Since we are only twenty three years apart, I thought it would be best to focus on her life up to the point where she decided to have kids. Though I knew most of what she told me it was still nice to just sit and talk about her life experiences. My mother was born to older parents and was the youngest of three children.…

My own cultural competency is built on a lifetime of international experiences. I grew up on the Dominican Republic, where I attended high school. I was surrounded by cultures different from my own, I was encouraged to identify and value both the commonalities and differences of the human experience. My cultural background is probably one of the most important things to me. My family came to the United States from Ludwigshafen, Germany decades ago, and although I personally have never travelled out of the country, I've always cherished how in touch we are with our roots. Eating homemade Spritzgebäck every Christmas while waiting for Christkind to arrive, gathering around to hear Oma read the classic, albeit terrifying, children's stories from der Struwwelpeter, and dancing to polka music around my house are just a few of my favorite memories. My great-grandmother, who I call "Oma", is the main reason that I have such a huge interest in learning about my heritage. She has been through so much throughout her lifetime and I have immense gratitude for the opportunity to hear her stories firsthand.…
