Personal Narrative-My Most Popular Music Player

The screeching of my violin echoed off the wall as I struggled to play Mendelssohn's concerto in E minor. The double stops that were meant to flow in harmony came out in a jumbled mass of notes indistinguishable from the shriek of a dying cow. I whimpered as these terrible sounds emitted out of my violin, and threw my violin down in defeat. I slowly tilted my head towards the clock, a terrifying reminder that my addition was only 10 min away. I gathered up my music, and ambled away from the empty practice room to where my judge would listen to my audition. A tearful boy my age brushed past me. He exited the room I was heading for, room 218. It sent a shiver down my spine thinking it was an omen for things to come. When I entered the room, …show more content…
I was surprised as I had fairly accurate intonation, for from perfect, but better than my miserable performance in the practice room. Then I saw it coming: a trio of notes, going all the way up to the 11th position of …show more content…
My heart nearly stopped when I thought about the possible outcomes of joining the orchestra. It was a state orchestra, where people of all areas competed for the limited seats. Furthermore, the minimum age requirement was 12, which I was at the time. I’ve heard tales of people getting kicked out before due to lack of skill (from parent gossip), and it certainly didn't sound fun. Even if I did manage to stay in for more than one day, I might be ridiculed by kids who have won various musical competitions. Still my worst fear was letting down my parents. I had put so much hope into them, if I struggle to keep up with the orchestra or even get kicked out, they would be heartbroken. I sat on the couch staring at the acceptance paper wondering if it had opened up a new opportunity for me to rise, or an even bigger chance to

College is a life changing investment that prepares for life and career. The vast spectrum of knowledge, skills obtained, and experiences from a college degree more than compensates for the monetary cost of tuition. Creating art is my passion; I have always wanted to become a great artist ever since I was a child drawing on my walls and copying pictures from books. I have devoted my life to improving my talents by illustrating my own stories, practicing drawing daily, and challenging myself to earning my own money doing what I love by drawing commissions. Learning how to communicate through illustration is a valuable skill that will live with me for the rest of my life and progressing my artist career.…

I sat in a crowded auditorium with nothing but my thoughts before I tried out for the Contra Costa County Honor Band. After about two hours I was led into the audition room drenched in sweat with my oboe in my trembling hand. I managed a pretty good audition, but after replaying the audition over and over in my head I doubted whether I would get in. A week later, my band director congratulated me on making principal oboe and handed me Maslanka's Symphony 7, with about 4 parts marked solo in bold letters.…

Why I Sing Chaeley Winkler I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t singing. Of course, I know there was time before I could speak or burble as infants do, so there must have existed a certain silence before sound, however the mere thought of being so silent—unable to reach out with voice or touch—disturbs me to no end. But these thoughts of a time before sound hadn’t quite crossed my mind until I began to question the finer, tinier oddities in my life. These questions emerged at around the age of seven, before they had manifested as inner thoughts.…

I was playing lacrosse on a warm spring day in Glen Ellyn. I could feel my adrenaline spike, accompanied by my heart beating out of my chest. We finally had the ball on our side. The first place team that happened to be our school’s arch nemesis, had selfishly kept the ball to themselves so far. Every second we had possession was precious as we knew the opportunities to score would be few.…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

A rite of passage that seemingly many East Asian children go through, with varying degrees of success, is learning an instrument. Parents hope that coercing their child into playing music will leave a positive influence. Similarly, I experienced this time-tried journey at the age of seven. With this paradigm in mind, my mother decided that it was the right time for me to start learning the piano, but I was completely against it. Initial rebellion were tantrums; fake tears spilt in hopes of avoiding practice sessions. However, as time slowly passed, I started falling in love with the massive, wooden instrument.…

I have this unexplainable feeling I get that lives inside of me, something so powerful and sensational that I can feel it deep in my bones. If you asked me to explain this feeling I’d have to tell you it's as if something inside of me is telling me, this is how things should be, this is how I should feel. It’s unbelievably invigorating, so much that I don't think anyone could quite understand what this feeling truly is. When my elementary school years were coming to an end I realized I wanted to be something different, someone, who did something worthwhile, so I decided I wanted to be a violinist.…

Whether it was my young self having the desire to play the violin or simply me being obstinate in not listening to adults, it’s a wonder to realize that what defines me today is all due to my younger self refusing to give up. Despite my determination, it became clear to me that my passion for the violin was not matched by the effort that I was putting into the instrument. As part of my instruction on the violin, I participated annually in ASTACAP-American String Teachers Association Certificate Advancement Program. Until…

Dancing in the Spotlight Standing in the spotlight is a very frightening, gut-wrenching accomplishment. Dancing alone in the spotlight can be even more so. I experienced dancing in the spotlight two years ago, when I played the part of Clara in the Nutcracker. Of course, it all started with dance, or rather, without dance. My mom was driving me to the studio, but I was not feeling well, so she strode inside to inform my teacher I was unable to dance that day.…
