This was in the beginning of the book when they were just finding out about Helen’s disability, not able to hear or see. To me, this passage means that Kate still has hope, and that she is willing to do everything it takes for Helen to see and hear.
This fall I have experienced a series of injuries. In total, I have missed about 10 weeks of sports. Soccer is my passion. It always has been. I love being out on the field, feeling the morning dew tickling the bottom of my feet. I love the light smell of grass clippings, as it tingle up my nose. I love hearing coaches roar at the referee when they makes terrible calls. I love the taste of sweet victory after we beat a tough opponent. So clearly, missing 10 weeks of soccer wasn’t the most ideal situation for me. Just like Captain Keller, I was extremely discouraged. I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be able to play again, and even if I was able to play, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to catch up after missing 10 weeks in a row. However, just like Kate, I was willing to do whatever it takes to get back out onto the field. I was determined to heal my injuries and play the sport I love. So I put myself to work.

After about the first 30 minutes I had ran across the field and back around 50 times. I had paining cramps all over my body, but there was something in me that made me keep on running. My breathing pattern could be heard from all the way across the other side of the field. If I was a dragon, my breath would have lit the whole city of Washington D.C. on fire. I could feel my muscles getting even more tired every step I took. Walking right then, would have felt like I was strolling on a cloud. But I didn’t walk. I kept on running.
