It has taken me quite a while to decide upon a major, but when I started looking into nursing, it was like everything just clicked. There have been many factors that led to this decision. The biggest one of all is my mother’s last pregnancy. Towards the end of her third trimester, she started having difficulties especially with her blood pressure. I remember being with her in the hospital and watching as a doctor and a couple of nurses fluttered in and out of her room.…

I refrain from making hasty decisions, a trait that’s made it easier to manage time and keep my life organized. It’s not that I don’t enjoy some spontaneity, just that I’ve had experience with faulty planning. I like to consider as many details and possible outcomes of a situation before making a decision; in fact, I believe it’s my best characteristic. Thinking things through allows me to make sound, satisfying choices in both my academic and social life. It is a practice that has saved me from careless mistakes on math tests and kept my activities.…

The stage has speakers, microphones, drums, turntables guitars and so forth situated on it. As we all waited patiently in the rain for what seemed forever they finally began to check tickets and let people funnel into the back.…

I managed to reach a point where I began making false promises to myself and others about addressing my situation. Among those empty promises was the one where I claimed I would give up drinking, attend rehab and try to get my life back on track. I even fiddled with the thought of seeking inpatient assistance if things weren't working as planned. Let's be clear and fair.…

Ten year old, Lafayette Rivers exclaims enthusiastically in Alex Kotlowitz’ 1992 biography There Are No Children Here, “If I grow up, I’d like to be a bus driver”. Sophomore year, in Honors English, we were reading out loud in class when this aspiration of a lower-income, innocent child, was lethargically muttered by a classmate, and to my dismay, I began to cry. I was saddened by the fact Naperville was less than 60 miles away from Chicago, yet my peers knew so little of what too many city children, like Lafayette who lived in Cabrini Green, had to endure. What broke my spirit, was that my peers were only sympathizing for that class period and would go on with their daily lives, giving no second thought to children who are less fortunate, who have to give so much just to help their families survive, and who are not even sure they will have the opportunity to grow up.…

Through the videos I was able to watch a baby develop the thought process that if they cry they will get attention.
