Personal Narrative: My Mission Trip To Nicaragua

Improved Essays
When I was fifteen years old my dad took me on my first overseas mission trip to Nicaragua. We went to build houses and provide food for people living in the slums. More than that, we went to show these people God's deep love for them. When we got there, it quickly became clear that my job was going to be hanging out with the kids in the neighborhood. I had tried to help with the building project but had developed a constant swarm of children around me that kept bumping into the not quite stable walls. So, we were sent away. Playing with these kids was a life changing for me. I saw how happy and content these children were even though they had nothing. I remembered all the times I had grumbled about not having a toy I wanted or the latest shoes and felt shamed. Most of these kids didn't even have shoes. Midway through the week, one of my new companions came walking toward me with a …show more content…
I also taught English in Khartoum, Sudan and have developed a strong love for people. I genuinely want to help others. I believe that the greatest gift that can be given is a relationship with God. I have found that walking up to someone on the street and pushing God at them is not always the best way to show His love. It has been my experience that if you can help someone with their physical needs, they are more receptive to listening to what you have to say about God. Because of my love for others and my love for God, I feel like I have been called to be a nurse. I would like to follow my dream of becoming a nurse through Colorado Christian University because my ideals match their ideals. It is important to me that I am able to demonstrate God's love to all my patients through my actions and attending a Christian University will only strengthen that idea as well as give me the tools to do so. I hope to have the opportunity to learn from the teachers here and become the nurse that I was made to

The week that I served as a missionary was the week for the developmental disorders, autism, and physical disabilities. My camper was a 17 year old girl named Breannah. She had intellectual disorder, which means her mental age was younger than her actual age. Her mental age was 14. Watching the kids in my cabin and those of other cabins made me realize that you should love who you are no matter what.…

I have had various experiences in the last two years, but the one I feel is the most significant is the time I spent volunteering for the Detroit Mission Trip. This opportunity presented itself in June of 2014 through my church, Metro South Church. I spent one week, Monday through Friday, each day-all day, commuting from my home in Brownstown to the inner city of Detroit. Each day of this mission trip consisted of various volunteer jobs. I was one of approximately 100 people that engaged in the process of making life better for others.…

I was only 14 when I went on my mission trip, but experiencing that such a young age has shaped me for who I am. I was involved in three mission trips, which all occurred in the States, but in all three-mission trips I helped people who I believe needed it most. I was proud of what I did and I think it was something that not a lot of people did at my age. One of my biggest motivators were the people I was helping. After going on my first trip, I had bonded with others and had made me realize what the real world is like outside a small town in Iowa.…

If you were to look in my room you’ll probably see a mess clothes all over the floor, papers on my bed, and tennis balls on my desk, you could say that I’m not the most organized person in the world. But upon looking at all that mess, there is a picture hanging on just one nail, collecting dust as if it was some kind of ancient artifact. As I look at it every morning before heading off to school I am instantly reminded of a trip that I now use to define who I am: commitment, compassion, and courage. This was the photo of my trip in Leon, Nicaragua.…

There are so many unique volcano activities in Nicaragua as they have 19 of them, but there is also a 23,000 year old sleeping volcano that I had to visit. The sleeping volcano, La Laguna de Apoyo, is located just outside of Granada, Nicaragua. The laguna is a protected area leaving its beauty untouched and spectacular place to swim as it is the clearest fresh water in Nicaragua and quite possibly Central America. I jumped! The best and quickest way to get into the Laguna is to simply jump.…

This happened a year ago when I was with my mom at home watching TV, talking, and having a good time together until we received a call from Venezuela telling us that one of my aunts was seriously ill. That was awful for me, it was traumatic because two days before I talked to my aunt and she was in excellent condition. My mom would not stop crying because she thought my aunt would die. We started praying every night for her to get better, but it was not like that.…

I was in the garden again. The damp soil running through my fingers. The water soaking through the knees of my jeans. I have experienced much grace through the trouble and poverty I have witnessed through my mission trips to Guatemala. I went to Guatemala June 9-16, 2014, and August 4-11, 2015 (and I plan on going back August 2016). Seeing the conditions these people live in daily, has helped me take to heart the kind of help they are in need of. Many of these people have no home, no family or no money to provide for their family, yet they are still thankful. Most of the time little boys and girls won’t have any shoes on their feet or their clothes will be far too small.…

This past summer, I took an adventure down to Antigua, Guatemala. While we were there we built homes, ran clothing distributions, worked at orphanages and malnutrition centers, gave food to the homeless, and preached on the streets to those around us. I didn’t expect much to change for me. I knew I’d have a greater appreciation for my life back home in the US, but I wasn’t prepared to be shaken so dramatically by what I experienced. I was put into a group with four other people to build a house for a small family who lived at below poverty level in Guatemala. Just to clarify, our poverty level in the United States is classified as just a bit above average in Guatemala.…

Based on the biography of Annika Rodriguez, I envision a woman who exuded compassion and a dedication to advancing her society. To me, Annika Rodriguez is an epitome of how I want to live my life- compassionate and dedicated to service that will create a better environment. Over the past years, I received various opportunities to serve my community through my passions in singing and service. Since the age of nine, I have been a member of my church’s (Gaboan Baptist) youth choir, where I am able to express my passion for singing and strengthen my religious faith.…

Cultural engagement to me is going out to your communities and loving on the people. When they need water give them a drink, if they need food give something to eat, and if they need clothes give them something to wear. It is all about what Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations.” (NKJV) It is not just presenting the Gospel in word only but living out the Gospel indeed. We need to be light bearers to our neighbors and show them the way of the one true God.…
