Personal Narrative: My Mission Trip To Kenya

I'm writing this, not to make people feel bad for me, but to simply tell my story. To help me heal, to share my story. To show that I do struggle everyday. I am not perfect like I try to show people. On this day two years ago I was able to go on the most amazing mission trip to Kenya! We left Jan 18th and came back on the 26th. The trip to Kenya was uneventful. I slept on every flight we were on, thinking that would help the jet lag. Unfortunately, the jet lag was a killer for me. I fell asleep just about anywhere I sat down. As I was in Kenya, I went on a Safari, which was really cool besides the fact that I fell asleep. As I was in Kenya I got to meet so many people and play with kids! It was the dream mission trip. I got some of my favorite souvenirs I have ever gotten before. As the week came to in end, it became more and more difficult to say goodbye to all these people that I just met. I did lots of crying. Little did I know this incredible trip would not end up so incredible. …show more content…
Around 10pm I boarded the plane. When I sat down their was a man approximately between his late 20s to mid 30s. He seamed to be a nice guy. He was asking me all kinds of questions about the U.S. By the grace of God I did not take my medication that would help me sleep. After about one hour and many questions later the man that sat next to me assaulted me. It felt like a bad dream. My body froze up. I was screaming inside but nothing would come out. With lots of details that are not necessary to share. The flight about 9-10 hours long from Nairobi to

I was only 14 when I went on my mission trip, but experiencing that such a young age has shaped me for who I am. I was involved in three mission trips, which all occurred in the States, but in all three-mission trips I helped people who I believe needed it most. I was proud of what I did and I think it was something that not a lot of people did at my age. One of my biggest motivators were the people I was helping. After going on my first trip, I had bonded with others and had made me realize what the real world is like outside a small town in Iowa.…

Somaliland, a country both recognized and unrecognized. It is unrecognized by the world, but recognized by its own people. The country’s desperate fight for independence from Somalia not only initiated a bond between its people, making them closer to one another, but as well as connecting them more deeply with their country. When my parents eventually immigrated to America, unbeknownst to their knowledge, brought the same bond with them. This bond strongly connects our family, even extending to our relatives as well.…

I had plenty of things to be excited about the night of May 12, I was leaving to Ethiopia the next day, I had just received a new Barbie doll, and when my grandchildren ask if I had any "back in the day" stories I could tell them that I once sliced my palm, to cover up for the fact that I have absolutely no horrible struggle stories as a child. A couple of friends came over that night and all of us kids were upstairs playing. For some reason, I was in my closet (maybe I was looking for something) and I found a gold, circular object. Little did I know it was a blade, I picked it up squeezed it in my palm and ran downstairs to show my parents.…

It was on a voluntary mission that I decided to go to the war stricken Sierra Leone. When I finally got off the bus in Freetown I was shocked to see three little children aged less than five years begging for alms in the hot sun. Suddenly I realized tears welling up in my eyes. Sensing that I may offer some alms, our guide instructed me not to give them money as they will be encouraged to beg rather than going to school. However, I could not overlook the plea in their innocent eyes.…

Limbs creaking, I slowly stepped out of the minivan which was driving my church group to Staten Island for a mission trip. Scanning the area, I saw something unbelievable. What was that? Befuddled, I did a double, then a triple take to confirm I wasn’t just having a hallucination. I wasn’t; it was no illusion.…

In 2008 I found myself in a new church, looking to fit in, and living life for myself. While I was in the youth group at this church it was considered my refuge.…

“Avery, do you know if you are you gonna be able to go to Mississippi with us?” The director of mission trips was asking me again. I replied “I don’t know yet, I want to though” nodding my head a little bit. I knew there was a reason for me to go on this trip because he had asked me so many times. Going on this trip was probably one of the best things that I could have done, it impacted me in so many ways, from my faith, to my self confidence, to realizing that what I had was way better than what these kids had and I had been taking it for granted for so many years.…

I am not the type of person to sit here and make certain events in my life seem horrible, and to make people feel bad for me. I've gone through bumps in my life, just like everyone else has. Different people go through different bumps in their lives, whether it's a matter of finances, deaths, schooling, careers, abuse, and even the occasional "high school breakup. " The bump that I've had to overcome, was the death of my mother in 2009. This experience changed my life, but also motivated me to never give up.…
