“Whatever you are be a good one!” - Abraham Lincoln. My Michigan Hero has been there since day one. He does anything imaginable. In my eyes can carry the weight of the world. He’s hands down one of the most amazing people i’ve known my whole entire life.…
I was born in Detroit and moved away before I had my brain was able to create memories. The only part of Detroit I knew was downtown. I’d go there for Tiger games, the Science Center, and the D.I.A. Before coming to U of D, I had the same stereotypical view of Detroit as most of United States. I thought of Detroit as being a city with a nice downtown but dangerous and rundown everywhere else. I was so wrong.…
It was the first day of our medical mission trip. The 13 of us were divided into four group: triage, clinic, pharmacy, and faith. Colin, Laure, and I sat in plastic white lawn chairs, facing the locals who sat on three wooden benches. We had prepared a short, spiritual lesson to bring Jesus’ love to the rural cities of the Dominican Republic. When I welcomed them in their native language, their faces softened.…

I have had various experiences in the last two years, but the one I feel is the most significant is the time I spent volunteering for the Detroit Mission Trip. This opportunity presented itself in June of 2014 through my church, Metro South Church. I spent one week, Monday through Friday, each day-all day, commuting from my home in Brownstown to the inner city of Detroit. Each day of this mission trip consisted of various volunteer jobs. I was one of approximately 100 people that engaged in the process of making life better for others.…
My Michigan Hero "We all have the capacity to be a superhero. In order to become one, you just have to find your unique power ability and exploit it for the greater good. The cape and mask are optional accessories, but a kind heart is essential. " - Robert Clancy My dad, Adam Ottjepka, is the person in my life that filled his capacity to be a hero. He had to grow up fast.…
Coming to Houston from a country where opportunities are very limited and economy is a challenge for the youthful, has made the last two years a little rough and hopeful at the same time for me and my family. Therefore, school is the most important in my life, after my family; I dedicate my time and my efforts to not become just the first professional in my family, but also to be an exemplary person in society thanks to the values that my parents have instilled in me. Before coming to Houston, I studied three years of Industrial Design in Colombia; although I loved my career, I think that I was too young (15 years old) to appreciate what school was providing me and to be sure what I wanted to do in life. Once I got here I understood that what…
Have you ever had someone that sticks with you side by side no matter what? Well I had and actually still do. That person is my dad. Who has brought me to realize that he is personally my Michigan hero throughout my 13 years of existence. What is the most amazing about my dad is his devotion to my sporting events.…
Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

Before I started elementary school, my family had moved four times. As a result I didn’t have any close friends and always longed for having someone whom I could talk to. That is why when Mr. Paul Farris said “Welcome to the neighborhood!” with his bright and warm smile the first day we moved to Ann Arbor when I was five years old, he immediately became a special friend to me. What I didn’t expect is he also becomes my Personal Michigan Hero.…

On May 20th, 2013 a massive tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma. The tornado was discussed all over the news. That state needed all the volunteers it was able to get to help clean up debris, then eventually start the rebuild process. My church saw this as an opportunity to have a mission trip. A group of teenagers and adults from my church planned a trip to Oklahoma that June.…
Ahimsa, a pillar of the Jain religion, translated to English as non-violence, was one of the key notions of Ghandi teachings. Growing up, I respected Gandhi’s teachings for his work with non-violence and thought this would be a great event to attend as my parents were advocates of non-violence back in India. So I decided to attend the event with my parents at City Hall in Hamilton on October 4th , the event was running the entire day and being crunched for time I was only able to go for a few hours during the peace walk down the streets of downtown Hamilton. A few interesting facts I learned about the city was its nickname “the Peace Capital of Canada”, I found it very captivating because I didn’t think Hamilton was known for anything but it’s…
My personal Michigan hero is my father. For this essay I chose my father because all my life I have looked up to him, even when I was too young to realize it, because my dad has guided me through life, teaching me valuable life lessons and will always be there for me and my family. My dad has changed so much in his life for my brother and I, spent hours for a day for years raising us to be the people we are today and I could never repay that. At a young age my father’s parents divorced, and he did not see his real father often because he was in the Coast Guard. He then vowed at a young age, and then to his future wife(my mother) that he would never divorce and do that if he had children.…
