Personal Narrative: My Minority Experience

Improved Essays
For my minority experience, I decided to attend a church service at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Warsaw, Indiana. The service lasted for about one hour and was attended by many individuals of various ages. When the members of the church first walked into the sanctuary, they walked up to the front and kneeled or bowed to the cross and then walked to their seats and said a prayer that I did not know. Throughout the service, there were a few songs that were sung and the priest spoke for the majority of the time. At the end, the members of the church then took communion and received a blessing and anointment with oil from the priest. The first moment when I was impacted the most by, was when the priest threw holy water on the congregation. I had never experienced this in my life and was a bit confused at the reasoning behind this action. However, a very kind woman next to me explained that this was a way for them to represent baptism and the cleansing of our sins. I liked that they included this in their service because it literally forces you to consider the sacrifice Christ made for us on the cross and many churches fail to even speak of the death and resurrection of Christ each Sunday. …show more content…
I did not participate in their actual communion since I am not a member of the Catholic church but I did go and have the priest bless me and anoint me with oil. I have also never been anointed with oil, at least as far as I can remember, so it was interesting to participate. It was an interesting experience, especially seeing as how people were so comforted by this action. I have just never seen a congregation finding someone so worthy of their adoration. That may not be the right word to use in regards to how they actually feel but it just seemed to me that they were positioning their priest as a worthier individual than anyone else, apart from

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

I found out when I went there, that this church has multiple locations scattered across the world; the other location is in Hong Kong, China. It was difficult to attend this church service, because of the fact that it's different from the usually church service that I'm more comfortable being around. I have been Catholic for an 8 month, but been attending a Catholic mass for 2 years. The ways I found it different then a Catholic Mass was that the church service only have communion once a month, they don't believe that Jesus is alive in the Eucharist, and they…

I always knew people worshiped other Gods and had other religions besides the one that I have. However, it was a different experience to see how they worshiped and showed dedication. The service lasted longer than a normal church service that I would normally attend. Even though they knew we were of a different religion, the people were friendly. They made us feel welcomed and wanted.…

They also have 2 other meetings that are English. There were about 100 people in attendance at the congregation. Pretty large crowd. The first thing that stood out to me was that they don’t have saints all over like we do. This makes sense because they don’t believe in saints.…

In my ethnographic trip I headed to a Non-Denomination Hispanic Christian Church. They hold services every weekend so I specifically chose Sunday night to hear their message. I chose this church because I have a grandmother who attends here and I felt comfortable to have someone I knew guide me. My initial thoughts prior to visiting this church was the same as the other churches I had visited before. I expected to walk in and sit down with no one really paying much attention to me.…

The worshipers were very well dressed - most of the men were wearing suits, the women had beautiful outfits as well, wearing dresses, suits, high heels, make up and a lot of jewelry. I think they dress up out of respect for God, but also consider their Sunday gatherings as a social event, too. I have seen at least 5 generations there: newborns and children (approximately 15% of all members), teenagers (5%), young adults (20%), mid-age adults (25%), and elderly people (35%). It was nice to see a lot of children and young adults in church, it meant to me that the Greeks and other minorities value their traditions and show on their own example how important that was. I could easily detect some Ukrainian and Russian female parishioners, as they…

Growing up being a minority in a small, rural, almost all white community was a challenge for me. I had to learn to adapt to my surroundings while learning the values and traditions of two cultures. This led me to gain a greater understanding of how to overcome difficulties with the wisdom of both experiences. By being a minority, I also saw a great opportunity before me. I recognized that I could help eliminate false stereotypes and racist norms that a person may have had.…

For my cultural immersion experience I want to talk about a day I spent at Holy Infancy Church. It was Sunday, January 10, 2016, my friend Jared decided to take me and a couple of our other friends who weren’t Catholic to his grandparent’s church, which was in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. While first walking into the church the Priest was greeting everyone that entered by name, he recognized that my friends and I were not regulars at the church, so he stopped and asked us our names and welcomed us to the church. The Mass started with reading from the Old Testament, which would rotate from reading to the singing of hymns. Then those who have done their Holy Communion would get up and receive the body of Christ and kneel for the Eucharistic…

This Ritual Observation Project will be discussing my observations at Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. I went there on June seventh to gain insight first hand into the Catholic Church’s rituals and beliefs. I will begin by breaking down the entire mass that took place during my observation then I will compare and contrast Catholicism to Baptist Christianity (my religion). When I first entered the area where the mass was to be held at, I began to notice the exquisite detail and the Stations of the Cross, which shows Jesus’ crucifixion. The pictures that show the fourteen Stations of the Cross can be found in my Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church PowerPoint presentation.…

During the first decade of Christianity, Christians followed Jewish traditions and went to synagogue with those who had not converted to Christianity. They attended temple daily and celebrated the Sabbath as they always had. Up to about 20 years after Christ’s death Christians had to be converts to Judaism before converting to Christianity. It took the temple being destroyed in 70 a.d. to show the early Christians that they were separate from the Jewish people. They realized that Jesus was the High Priest and He was sufficient.…
